Does anyone have any suggestions for a decent grain free dry food that is as cheap as possible? A cat I'm "baby sitting" is having some health and coat problems and I suspect that it may be diet related so I'd like to try to switch her to a grain free diet to see if she improves. Her owner is unfortunately not doing well financially and having four more cats the food has to be as cheap as possible. I was thinking about Chicken Soup or Taste of the Wild but I thought maybe someone has another suggestion.

(the cat has seen a vet and is going in for blood work soon so the food change is not being done instead of vet care.)

Chicken Soup for the Soul and Taste of the Wild have both been recalled recently, so I would stay away from those. Dry food isn't typically good for kitties, but if you need a dry food, try Blue Buffalo, according to Petsmart it seems to be the cheapest grain free dry food. :D

Good luck!!

Chicken Soup isn't grain-free. It's a decent all-around food, though, and usually quite affordable. My cats did well on it. TOTW is the cheapest grain-free dry food.

I checked on Blue Buffalo and it looks pretty expensive. Their biggest bag is just 11 pounds and it's $35. The owner of these cats is homeless and pretty broke so I don't think he could afford it. I think it will have to be Taste of the Wild. Their 15 pound bags are $28 but even that is almost twice as much as he pays now for the Purina Cat Chow. I wish there was something in between.

To be honest, the best cat food for your cat is a cat food you can afford. So tell the owner of these kitties, no pressure to feed grain free. You could even buy low cost canned for the price of a bag of dry food, and it would be better for the cats.

Maybe she doesn't need grain-free, just something better than Cat Chow? I think I would try the Chicken Soup first. Or all-life-stages 4Health (only $20 for 18 pounds!), if buying TOTW will cause a hardship.
