Hi everyone,

My fiance and I recently changed our 8 month old kitten over to Medi Cal Hypoallergenic HP dry and Medi Cal Hypoallergenic moist, ever since the switch her stool has been mushy which I thought maybe was because of the change. She has been on this food since June 6 and the mushy stool is still going on. She shows no sign of sickness or discomfort or dehydration. She is acting normal this is why i'm wondering if it could be an intolerance to Medi Cal Hypo foods?

She was previously on a Nutro dry food and Blue Menu moist with absolutely no bowl issues. She was dewormed on June 20 and was on prednisone up until a week and a half ago, not sure if that would affect her at all?

I appreciate any input available.

Thanks very much,

Amanda

Well, deworming ingredients can cause loose stool, but she had this issue before the 20th, so hmmm...

If you didn't ease her into the switch, it's possible the abrupt change is causing the problem, rather than the brand formula itself.

Unless she was allergic to the previous food - I would blend in a good 50% or so of the old stuff, and gradually over the course of a couple weeks ease more of the new stuff in.

A water fountain is a good idea too, to compensate for chronic diarrhea, if she's not a big drinker.

You don't give her milk or table scraps, I assume?  Cats can have food sensitivities (not even outright "allergy") to things - cow's milk, many dairy products, fishes...

Anytime a switch was recommended I've always eased the cats into it, I thought it was odd that our vet said to immediately stop her on the other food and make the switch right away to Hypo foods. She is a very sensitive cat so this is why he recommended the immediate switch. She gets no other food than her hypo and our other cat is fed on the counter since the kitten can't make it up there (so shes not being overfed either).

I'm worried its something in the Hypo foods that is irritating her stomach. We used to have a water fountain but the vet had said the plastic was making her lip flare up since shes so sensitive. She just cant seem to win!
