I have a 6 year old black maine coon cat.  He at one time had beautiful long black fur.  After having a bladder issue where they had to shave his belly for an ultrasound, he has developed a problem with licking and scratching.  He is completely bald from the legs all the way up the sides of his body.  The vet said that he was dealing with allergies.  He has had numerous shots to help relieve the symptoms but they are not working.  I give him once a week oatmeal baths to cool his heated inflamed skin.  Is there anything else that can be done for him.  I was told the benadryl will help him a little.

Well, he doesn't have to have fleas for that to be the problem. A cat that is allergic to fleas can get just one bite and it can cause all kinds of problems.

Is there a holistic vet you can see? http://www.ahvma.org if you're in the U.S.

What food are you feeding him? Have you changed it? Tried single-source protein, limited ingredient foods?

Our Chumley gnawed his belly and legs bare. We saw a vet trained in Chinese medicine when our traditional vets couldn't help and diet didn't help. He was diagnosed with an "extreme spleen Qi deficiency." She prescribed herbal pills I could buy on the internet. They solved the problem.
