I give our cats the PureBites as well and instead of buying the cat size, I buy the dog size bags as they are actually cheaper. The pieces are bigger, but easy to break up. The cat and dog PureBites are the same ingredients.
I'm glad you mentioned this, as I was going to.  I cannot believe the difference in price between what they "market" as the "cat" purebites and the "dog" purebites, when, indeed, they are exactly the same thing!  It's ridiculous.  I just bought a 6.2 oz bag at a local pet supply store for about $20.  I think the cat size is .3 (that's POINT 3 oz) for about $4!!!!!!!!!

Is there a difference in meat quality among the different name brands for freeze-dried treats?

Whole Life Pet Products describes the entire process, which they call Farm to Friend.
I believe so.  I love that some companies, such as whole life and fresh is best, source their meats from us sources as well as package them here.  I believe Grandma Lucy's would be another treat line that does the same, possibly Dr. Harvey's, I'd check (as someone else mentioned) Etta Says.  Not sure how halo treats compare, always found them much more expensive and never chose to use or offer them in my business.

I too try to stay with freeze dried meat and organs. I get from pet food direct. They have lots of varieties. Moon especially likes the turkey hearts. They are big so I just cut them down. We use treats for training so he gets some every day.

I went to the Petco and Petsmart websites to see what they got. Both stores seem to only sell PureBites as far as I could tell, so I check it out. Some recipes are labeled MADE IN THE USA and others have the label "USDA INSPECTED." Um, how do you explain that one? It can't just be made in the USA and not be USDA-inspected, right?

It looks like they state how many calories there are per treat because I saw only 1 calorie for chicken and 3 calories for beff liver.

Sure it can - all it takes is the meat to be processed at all by a pet food facility - as much as grinding - for that USDA inspected label to come out.
Edit -some exotic meats, even though human grade, fall under Voluntary USDA inspection... Venison, Rabbit, Elk, Buffalo.... It might be a possibility too. But for pet foods, it is not a requirement. Human grade raw meats, yep....

We don't feed treats. Show cats get shredded cooked chicken while at the show, that's as close to treats as things get.

I read a lot of baby food is made with onions, which are toxic to cats, so I would rather feed unhealthy treats.

What is Kitty Kaviar?

I've heard that some meat baby foods have onion powder, so I always check the ingredient list. I've never found one with onion powder, out of every brand I've looked at :dk:. The only additive I've seen is cornstarch for thickening, but most don't even have that. I wonder if maybe baby food used to have onion powder back in the '80s or something. Anyway, I use it for sick kitties and ferrets and no problems yet. Just read the ingredients.

I think Kitty Kaviar is bonito flakes.

Do you really think I'd feed my guys onions?  I read labels :) and buy the just meat ones that do not contain onion.

Kitty Kaviar is shaved bonito flakes..the *original* brand of this..many companies have since produced their own version.  Company was started in California in the 1990s, I was lucky enough to be a customer of and get to know a bit,  the creator/first owner of the company.

I'm rather fond of bonito flakes myself. . .I did grow up in Japan! Our cats loved them, too--I should have gotten the idea to sell bonito flakes as cat treats back in the U.S., I could have made a fortune! :lol3:

Willowy, that, as I recall what Todd said, is how Kitty Kaviar began :)  He would eat them and noticed his cats interest.  My husband and I used to watch the original Iron Chef show, and one of my favorite of the chefs (don't ask me to spell his name) would always make his 'broth of vigor' using the japanese name for these flakes.  I see them in the oriental grocery stores but haven't had the gumption to try them in a broth yet.

I think the 1st and 2nd stages mainly are ok but the 3rd stages I have found onion listed(gerber for one).

Yup:)  I babysat and was offered 2 jars that the baby didn't like for the cats and took them as a treat and when I went buy more gerber was on sale and checked label before stocking up and saw that.  I stick with the purer 1 or 2 depending on sales.

Aren't the 3rd stage foods chunky? Which is why I never looked at them, I guess
.
Not sure, I and the other folks I showed with knew to just look for the early stages, just meat foods.  Plus over the years, I've used baby food as an appetite tease for my crf kitties I.e. after a sub-q fluid treatment, I'd give patrick a baby spoonful of baby food :)
