I use freeze dried beef lung or freeze dried lamb lung as both treats and 'food toppers' when one of mine is being picky.  Mostly I just use the Merrick brand - they are meant for dogs - I get them because they are a big bag (1 pound) and only $14 here.  The cats love these much more than other types of freeze dried meat.

That is another reason I wondered if the ingredient list matters a little bit. Extremely picky felines and sick cats may not want to eat without the food topper kind of treat.

I don't buy treats. I'm seriously considering dehydrating some raw meat for treats though, just haven't gotten around to it.

The reason they crave the grain-packed treats is not because they want plant sourced food but because they are packed with artificial flavours as is most poor quality dry foods and some wet. Its the same with human food, we do not eat junk food because were craving the taste of processed grains, corn syrup, salt , were addicted to the artificial flavour, texture, smell that makes us eat them.

Here is a thread on treats I started a few months back. http://www.thecatsite.com/t/244156/beef-lung-cat-treats#post_3204424

IMO treats do not have to be you giving your cat 'junk food', you can find them freeze dried meat or organs, you can give them fish (for omegas), probiotics sprinkled on top, etc. There are healthy treats available that cats love! So why bother getting them addicted to whats bad for them and giving our furbabies junk treats just because we think dessert or junk food is normal for us once in awhile? Cats especially do not go around eating sugar/grains after they've killed an animal. As far as I know eating dessert or junk food once in awhile is a human concept, not something you see in the wild unless an animal is starving.

However, on a positive note, they are great for training cats/dogs because they provide a reward, but there are healthy treats available that cats love so there absolutely no need to feed them junk treats unless its all you can afford and you think its worth it. Again its all at the owners discretion.

My dad has Type 1 diabetes. Growing up, cake was a REAL treat - on birthdays. Snacks were fruit, carrot sticks, or celery sticks. I agree, Violet, absolutely no reason their treats need to be junk food. :dk:

I suspect the attraction is animal digest and as in kibble, the fat sprayed on at the end.

There is one small problem with the Whole Life treats: According to the list of stores that sell them, they are not sold in Gainesville. Does that mean they are not at Petco or Petsmart?

If you feed grocery level treats look around for clearence treats at petsmart or petco for sure and others must do the same.  On 50% off with coupons you can score these at a greatly reduced price.  Some places mark it down month of experation others mark it a few months sooner.

You know what sucks?

Only one company makes pill pocket treats and it is not Whole Life Pet Products.

According to Greenies, veterinarians made up the recipes for pill pockets. I find that hard to believe when the treats have things called corn syrup and wheat gluten.

I used to feed temptations because they were cheap and my cats adored them, but when I realized my boy cat could possibly get crystals from them I stopped.

Now I feed My Little Lion treats, I find them at Petsmart and they contain:

Ingredients: salmon, dried potato, vegetable glycerine, chicken liver, animal plasma, whey protein, dried pumpkin, natural chicken flavor, carrageenan, yeast extract, phosphoric acid, lecithin, fat product (a source of DHA from algae), citric acid, potassium sorbate (a preservative) and mixed tocopherols (a preservative)

I put animal plasma in bold because that is a brand new ingredient for me, I have never seen that in anything I have ever given my kitty crew. However, my picky girl LOVES them and she never touches 'healthy' treats. I also have fed the brand new Blue Buffalo cat treats and they like those as well and they contain

Ingredients: chicken, whole ground brown rice, oatmeal, maple syrup, vegetable glycerin, whole ground potato, gelatin, natural flavor, salt, fish oil, brewer's yeast, phosphoric acid, sorbic acid, ascorbic acid, taurine, citric acid, mixed tocopherols (source of vitamin e) and rosemary

Pill pockets aren't a treat, exactly. . .they're a way to get a pet to take a pill willingly. So probably even someone who doesn't want to feed their cat junk might be willing to use pill pockets as a necessary evil. I've always just used a cube of cheese (cut a slit in it and insert pill). It doesn't always work, but neither do pill pockets! :lol3:

Plus I think you're overestimating vets' nutritional knowledge. My mom got a magazine in the mail---the kind some vets send when your pet is due for shots---and there's an article about pet food in there that is pure and utter propaganda. I've never seen a worse article on pet food. In a magazine that comes from a vet! I'm going to make a thread about it tomorrow, when I have the magazine with me. It's just egregious.
