About 3 mos ago my healthy 5 yr old male cat was running around the house on a Sunday and I noticed blood spots around the downstairs. I found my cat and he had blood on his back side. I called his vet and got the on call vets number. I told her what I saw and she said I charge $150 just to come into the office so are you sure he needs to be seen. I said yes and met her an hour later. She flelt his stomache said his bladder was swollen. She felt he had been hit by a car or had a blockage. She asked me what I wanted her to do and I said whatever you need to do to save him. She said she would call in the morning and I could take him to his regular vet. When I took my cat to her he was walking, running, eating and drinking. If it weren't for the blood I wouldnt have never known he was sick. I left there with no worries. The next morning when my son and I picked him up he was in agony. She said she had inserted a catherter to relieve the bladder and gave him a muscle relaxer. She didn't take an X-ray or do any blood work. She gave him a bill for $260 on top of the $150 I paid the day before. I immediately took him to his vet. She took him out of the pet carrier and he stood him up and he collapsed. She tried again and his back legs just gave out. She picked him up said she felt a hard mass and asked me for the X-rays from the other vet. I said she didn't take any and she seemed a little aggravated. She asked if she could take one and I said yes of course. 5 min later she came and took my son and I back to look at the X-rays. He had a small pelvic break. She said he had been hit by a car. The blood was from the bladder being bruised. There was nothing wrong with any of the attaching joints. The problem now was that when the other vet shoved the catheter in she aggravated the break and damaged some of the nerves on the spine. So his back legs were paralised . If the other vet had took an X-ray she would have seen the break and could have surgically inserted a catherter. His regular vet started him on pain meds which started causing constipation. She asked me what I wanted her to do and I said do whatever you can to save him. I left and she called to tell me had pushed out some stool but he was in so much pain he was starting to go into shock. She called back 2 hours later and said he was getting worse he had fluid starting to fill his lungs. My son and I went out and looked at new X-rays and saw the lungs an fluid unde the skin. She told us he was in a lot of pain and distress and she felt she couldn't save him in the end. So my son and I chose to have him put to sleep. We both cried and they took us to him. She said he hadn't moved or made noise all day. I got right in his face and said hello my little crumbcake! He meowed so loud! He tried to move his head to see us. We both held him then we petted him until his last breath. It didn't even take a minute. I am so angry at the on call vet. I called her and told her that crumbcake died and I asked her why she didn't take an X-ray and she said she ASSUMED I didn't want to spend a lot of money on him. I said I told you to do what u need to do to save him how did that translate into I didnt want to spend any money on him. I told her she killed him and I wasn't going to pay her. I put a stop payment on her check. When I got a bill from her I called again and told her what she I'd killed my cat and I would never pay her. Does anyone know about pelvic breaks that would be an outside opinion? How should I handle the on call vet who didn't take an X-ray?

I'm so sorry for you due to the loss of your little guy. I would be so pissed off too. Is there a vet that owns the clinic you could talk to? Someone above her? I would just explain that you said you wanted to do whatever it took to save him. The on call vet had suggested he'd been hit by a car yet she didn't do use the most useful diagnostic tool available to fix the issue. It's really pretty ridiculous when you think about it. If she had any question at all... Just ask...
