I took my 2 year old orange tabby to the vet a few days ago because he has been limping a lot lately. They took an x ray and said he has luxating patella on both back knees. His left is a lot worse than his right. The vet told me he would need surgery but he had to lose weight first (he's 22 1/2 lbs). I switched his diet to wet food after doing research for the best and safest way for him to lose weight. He's been on the new diet for 2 days now he likes the new wet food but does not eat nearly enough of it. I give him 6 oz of wet food though out the day and 1/3 cup of dry food at night. It worries me that he is not eating as much as I thought he would. Before the diet I would leave dry food out all day and let him eat as he wanted, but I have 3 other cats so I didn't know how much anyone ate. Is this normal for my cat to not be eating as much as he should now that I'm monitoring what he eats. And he cannot get to the other cats food. Please help

Most adult cats only eat about 5-6 ounces of canned food a day. Check out the thread about the 27-pound foster cat. . .he's getting 6 1/2 ounces. So that's plenty. I don't think he'll lose weight if you keep giving him the dry food plus the canned.

:yeah: Do you have a scale at home? Does it include ounces? If so, weigh him every few days for the first few weeks, make sure he's not losing weight too rapidly. As Willow says, there is a good discussion of weight loss in cats in this thread: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/245236/mickey-my-27-lbs-foster-and-his-journey-back-to-a-healthy-weight

I'm pretty sure 6 ounces of wet food is plenty for now.

Ok thanks for the replys. I'll check out that post. I've never fed my cat an all wet food diet so I was a little concerned he hasn't been eating a lot.
Thanks again!
