Squee has had ear problems for... well, forever. Her ears tend to be waxy and she's had a few ear infections, usually in her right ear. Today I noticed that she was tilting her right ear quite a bit so I took a look at it. It's bright red inside, warmer than the other ear, and there's blood or a scratch in the "corner" near the front of her ear (from scratching?). It's Canada Day so the vet's office is closed. What can I do to make her ear better? She's still acting alert (she wanted to play and got excited when I gave her treats) but her right eye also seems a little bit watery.

Could it be allergies? She has dandruff and sometimes does that cat cough that looks like asthma. We told our vet about that and she gave us some hairball medicine but Squee didn't really eat it. We changed her food a few months ago and changed the cat litter to a fairly dustless variety, but she still coughs every now and then.

edit: Also, she occasionally gets these small red blotches between her ear and eye. I always thought they were scratches from itching her ear or playfighting with Scratch. But now that I think about it, they're always on the right side, which is also the side with her problematic ear. Could this be connected?

Ear problems can be chronic, and it sounds like the situation you're dealing with.  Unless she has some major crisis, I wouldn't be in a panic and would wait until you can get into the vet tomorrow.

The red spots between her eye and ear are from her scratching most likely. If she doesn't have allergies, she most likely has some kind of yeast infection or something like that in her ear.  Until you can get to the vet, there's not much you can do.  You might want to talk to the vet about doing a culture on the ear wax to see if there's a yeast infection going on.  Also, if she has allergies, her symptoms are going to be much like a human (runny eyes, itchy eyes and itchy ears).  Do you notice her pawing at her eyes and/or ears excessively or scratching her ear a lot and leaning her head into her paw?  That's what my kitties do when their ear allegies act up.  I give them a daily antihistamine and increase their lysine when I notice the symptoms.
