well I just took in  a stray that has been outside for about 10 years. He is in my bathroom and does not appear happy. Very scared. Also has FIV but that does not bother me. I will introduce him to a bigger room eventually but it has other cat odors(urine)  should I remove the carpets with the odor or just leave them?? Also how long will it take till I can let the cat go to another room? I feel bad for this cat as he is so use to being outdoors and under a deck and to be thrown indoors I feel will make his immune system worse. But he needs to be looked after and fed properly. I hope I did the right thing and not kill him altogether. I hope he comes around??

Try to minimize all stress moments. both because he is a long time semiferal, and has this FIV. High stress makes not seldom many diseases to bloom up, form being sleeping.

Was he somewhat human friendly outside?  If so, you should have good chance to succeed.

If he was shy, not wanting human contact - more difficult.  What is realistic to hope for is he will be semi-tame indoors, ie semiferale accepthing to live indoors.  Some people accepts this.

You do right, let him begin to feel safe in one small room (bathroom here). After it, he can get access to another room - with free possiblility to go back into his safe room if he wish.

You can try with soothing, relaxing music (there is a sticky tread).  A Feliway diffuser may help.

I suppose he is neutered - or will be soon?

The urine shouldnt matter much, outside cats have often easier to accept foreign cats than home cats. But as if if it no big problem for you to take the the carpets away - I would advice you do it.

Good luck!

Really, you are doing the best thing for this guy, especially now that you just found out about the CRF :shame: He needs to be indoors and cared for. He will adjust and honestly, I think in a few days time, he will settle and become more relaxed since he is already so attached to you and was already friendly. It is not like you are socializing a truly feral cat, so you have that in your favor. He just needs time to feel safe. He is sick and needs this right now  As for the other larger room, I would move him fairly quickly since he is already quite friendly with you anyway. BUT I would remove the carpets and use an enzymatic cleaner on the floor as well, if you can. Put two large open litter boxes in that room, more is better than just one. Loads more vibes tonight for both of you :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: and to your mom too :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Here is an article with some tips about cleaning up cat urine, just in case!! http://www.thecatsite.com/a/how-to-remove-cat-urine
