I've always fed my cats high quality dry with a little wet as a treat every morning. Now that I have one with flutd, I'm starting to reconsider their diet. Right now the vet is saying to feed the Rx urinary dry and wet to my flutd cat. I've been reading some articles on this site. Here's what I'm proposing. Still feeding the high quatilty dry but less of it  and mostly wet food. I don't want to eliminate the dry completely as I work long hours and go away on weekends sometimes. I feel bad that I want to defy the vet, but it seems that giving him more water is the best solution. He's been on antibiotics for a month and a half not getting any better. How much wet food should the average cat get in a day?

Most adult cats eat 5-6 ounces a day.

Try to eliminate the dry as much as possible. Save it for weekends, and feed canned whenever you're around. There are also ways to feed canned food on long workdays (one way is to freeze it on the plate, then leave the frozen plate out when you leave. It should be thawed by the next mealtime. Or get an autofeeder with ice packs). It really does help a lot, and a lot of cats won't need the prescription diet if they get all wet food. If he absolutely needs the prescription diet, use the canned, not the dry.

I would not buy the rx dry, but I would get some of the wet and try him on that as much as possible to see if he starts to show improvement.
My one cat had recurring crystals and we kept him on the Hills c/d wet for quite a while until he had definitely gotten better. Then we slowly phased out the Hills in favour of a higher quality canned food, mixed with lots of water.
The key is more wet, mixed with water and only use a small amount of kibble if you have to.
The prescription diet is guaranteed to be the proper acidity and will help, but I understand not wanting to use it long term.

Another trip to the vet. This time I'm trying to get him to eat the hill's c/d. It's really hard any ideas? All he wants is the rx dry and the cheaper wet food.
 . It's a struggle to get 3/4 of a can into him.

A prescription food is only helpful if the cat will eat it :tongue2:. Do you think he'd eat it if you mixed it 50/50 (or less FF if you can get away with it) with Fancy Feast? The Classic formulas are grain-free, and most cats love FF.

You said on the other thread he eats raw chicken.... and likes it - do you think he could eat 100% raw?
