Hi, my cat Miley had 4 kittens a week ago ( her first litter ) and she has laid nest in my daughters cupboard but my daughter has asthma and a smell is starting to grow.  I am worried about my daughters health and think its best if i move the kittens to our sitting room where its warm, cozy and relatively quiet....can anyone give me some advice on how to do this without upsetting Miley please as last time i tried she picked up one of the kittens and had it by its leg....it doesnt seem hurt at all but is this normal behaviour and how easily hurt by the mother can these kittens be as she seems to sit on them a lot....thanks.

There shouldn't be any smells

Unless you have a kitten pen or enclosed space she will likely be uneasy in the other room. All you can do is move her and the kittens and shut off the bedroom so she has no access

None of my girls sit on their kittens, especially not at 4 weeks

Thank you soooo much for replying!!!  Can she hurt the kittens at all by lifting  them or lying on them?  When we moved her the other day she picked the one baby up and paced at our sitting room door as she couldnt get out but kept the kitten in her mouth all the time til she dropped it....i am such a loss as i dont want to upset her and risk her abandoning them?

Thanks

My cat often sits on her babies, but its like *oops am i sitting on one? sits bk up and looks under herself* or sometimes if she feels a little threatened she kinda sits round/on top them  protectively especially when we hold the very loud kitten that screams lol!

I think you'd be safe to move them, i moved my Kitty's kittens a few hours after she gave birth as she had them under my bed where it was drafty. What i did was lure Kitty away with a nice meaty treat and let her watch me move her kittens into the kittening box. She immediately got into the box, laid down and fed them. She has happily left them in this box since the birth, i have heard some cats like to move the kittens around though. My cat seems a bit clueless when it comes to picking them up, if one is one the floor mewing she looks at us as if to say *my baby is crying why haven't you picked it up and put it on my teat yet* lol!

Hi,

Thanks so much for your reply, you have put my mind at rest about a couple of  the concerns i had.  Well, Miley and her kittens have successfully relocated!!!  We moved the furry family into our sitting room and we got them settled for a while but Miley wasn't entirely happy with this i guess as she kept picking her babies up and pacing at the door again but finally found a space behind the couch thatshe was happy with so they have now ser up home in our family room behind the sofa!!!lol.  She seems to be happy and i can settle myself now that they are all happy and settled.

This may sound like a silly queston.....can Miley hurt the kittens by lifting them?  she seems to be grabbing them anywhere she can, she lifted one by the eg the other night which had us really concerned to say the least!!!  The kitten was fine but it kinda has me a little worried as she is still lifting them from wherever she can!!!lol.

Thanks again.

At 4 weeks they should be starting on solids and using a litterbox. Make sure you have a shallow litterpan close by or you're going to have a very definite smell behind your couch! Offer them some mushed-up canned food a few times a day, too.

She shouldn't be picking them up for much longer. Usually if the mama picks them up funny, they'll squall and she'll let go. Young mothers may not know any better, though, so if you see one squalling you might want to rescue it from her :lol3:. I don't think they'll be hurt, though.

Make sure you keep them until they're at least 10 weeks old! They'll learn a lot of important cat lessons by stayng with their mother longer.

I think she said they were only a week old, just that there were 4 of them. Don't worry moms pick their kittens up funny. I had a mother cat who would pick up her kittens by their head sometimes. They were always fine, but still scared me when she did it.

Oops! She didn't even say 4 week-old kittens either. Silly me. Well, be sure to offer a litterbox and solids by 4 weeks then. :tongue2:. And what I said about them squalling still stands. . .if they aren't complaining it probably isn't hurting them.
