Well, I guess I would say 19 because that is when I first moved out on my own and was responsible for everything myself, not saying I did a good job, but if I screwed up, I had to figure a way out of it :lol3:

At almost 30

Never supported myself in own housing though I put most of money made towards it.

But took car of mom from age 9, cats since 15.

I think if I had a kid it would be alot different but since that don't seem to be in my future my best answer is I will die a kid.  Almost all of the things I do anyone could do and I do it on my own time.  There is no get to work at 9 am or be fired.  When I work retail I am one of the harder workers who likes overtime but at home everything is more laid back.

Very interesting question.

I became an adult at 16. I was pregnant, we got married, and we had our son. It was hard, really hard. But we made it through it all and we celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary back at the end of April.

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I'm going to say age 12. Although I started taking over "mom" duties a couple of years before that, by age 12 I was pretty much taking care of everyone at home. I was going to school (of course), working at the Dairy Queen (illegally, but my friend's mom was manager and gave me the job), cooking dinners every night for the family, had taught myself to sew by then and was making my own dresses and blouses (I made several dresses for my mother, too, one was for my brother's wedding, and did all sewing repairs for the family). Every Saturday, I cleaned house top to bottom, and my Sundays were spent mowing and trimming my parent's 1-acre lawn, which took about 5 hours.

I had to get a job because my mother wouldn't buy me clothes - I made her mad once when we were clothes shopping (didn't like the styles she wanted me to wear, of course I didn't want to dress like her generation). So I had to get a job to have clothes, they were too expensive and fabric was cheaper so that's why I taught myself to sew. I bought my jeans and shoes and made the rest, I even made my prom dress that didn't turn out so great, according to my mother. I had thought it was okay but after that I was self-conscious the whole dance.

Ahhh.... memories of childhood. So glad THAT'S over. But it taught me to be tough and made me confident that I could survive on my own!

I'd say 28.. when I finally moved out of my parents house with a career to support my rent (then I lost the job a week after I moved.. grr). but I managed it for the year while searching for another job. I think I grew up a lot trying to keep my finances stable and learning how to cut back on things I really don't need.

Hmmm. Tough one. I guess I would have to 24, when I got married and moved out of the house, although I did pay my way through college and got a full time job before that.

Honestly sometimes it's hard to believe I am an adult. :lol3:

I was on my own and supporting myself at a young age, 16 or so, but I'd have to say I have definitely NOT grown up and am NOT an adult.  Furthermore, I do not know what I want to be when I grow up and I am 57 years old!!

I'm still waiting to fully grow up because most times I still feel like I'm 17 or so. But, I would have to say it would be when I was 29 and FINALLY left home. I tried so many times, had apartments and roommates lined up, and my mom always talked me out of it, saying I didn't know how to handle money and I would end up starving. Honestly, I didn't know how to handle money or budget, mainly because I was still living at home and never had to. I knew me, and the only way I would learn that is to throw me into the fire where I HAD to learn. But mom was old school and thought a young women should live with her parents until her wedding day.

So, when I had the chance to move to Guam (10,000 miles away), I bit the bullet, quit my job with notice and told my mom I was moving. I left with 2 suitcases and $40 in my pocket. To move in with a guy I met on the internet. Yeah, mom didn't talk to me for those 2 weeks, and it could have been a stupid move (parents met him and I met his parents...he was originally from NC and visited me previously) but it turned out ok. I found a job that I liked and excelled at and stayed there for 4 years. That was the first time I was forced to stand on my own and couldn't run back to mommy and daddy for help. It was rough at times, but definitely a learning experience.

But, I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up!

I guess 20 when I got married.  I was a military wife...learned some difficult lessons.  Good ones!

Yup!  An old friend I grew up with through my teen years came for dinner last night.  She moved across the country 8 years ago so it's been a while.  We did some fun reminiscing.  But I still feel like I just got out of high school and college not that long ago.  We were sort of talking about this last night too.  She has  a sister who just turned 21 and when she first got here she went out with her mom and her sister and the fact that they both ordered a drink with dinner just really struck her...like her baby sister is REALLY an adult now.  I told her that 18 might make you legally an adult for most things; but I dont see most people as really adults quite yet at that age.  There is just such a difference for most people between 18, 21 and then your late 20s!
