I have a 3 yr old cat that I took to the vet on sunday because he was straning to pee and was bleeding. They put a catheter on it for aorund an hour or so, drained him and then took it out. They told me I could take it home so I did.

Currently it's day 2 and my cat has incontinence. They said it's normal. He's a bit active and walks around but refuses to eat and I haven't seen him drinking any liquid since yesterday. He ate a little bit yesterday, I switched to canned food today and he just licked it for a bit and left it.

They gave me antibiotics on pills which he refuses to swallow no mater what I tried. He tries to bite everytime I try to give it to him so I opted to crush the pill and give it to him. He still stried to spit it out having a bit of foam comming out of it's mouth.

I called the vet and they told me that if he refuses to eat then I have to take him back tomorow.

Has anyone else experienced this with their pet? Are there any warning signs I should be aware of? It it normal for him to refuse to eat? Thank you.

This is quite common in male cats fed a kibble diet. Three of our boys blocked before we switched to wet food only.

Was the cause of the blockage crystals? An infection? Did the vet conduct a urinalysis and urine culture? Did they tell you the results? If crystals, did they tell you whether they were struvite or calcium oxalate?

When you say he's incontinent now - do you mean he's leaking urine, or he's peeing outside of the box?

The vet told my mom that it had some tiny particles or something that was causing the blocking. As far as I know he did not do any analisis, just inserted the catheter to drain him. He told me that the cause of the block was because of the dry food and lack of water on it. My mom would constantly feed him way more than he was supposed to eat. Still he's not obese. The vet also told me he had a big bladder.

He also told me that the Magnesium found in the dry food causes blocking.

I can't really say exacly what he told us since I was so worried that I wasnt really paying attention when he was speaking to my mom. She's not good at remembering either.

And by incontinence, he's leaking urine, but he also goes to his litter box sometimes. When he's lying down, he's always leaking tiny drops.

He needs to drink more than eating with bladder problems. My Bonaparte had similar problems back in January, he had a catheter put in but it was left there for several days. We gave him lots of water through a needleless syringe to help flush his system out. His problem was caused by calcium stones and gravel in his bladder, which eventually had to be removed with emergency surgery. But as LDG says, there are different types of blockages and only the vet can tell, by doing a full analysis. The treatments and follow-up diets are different too. Wet food certainly helps.

If he is still not eating tomorrow and if you cannot get his medicines into him then you must take him back to the vet. One tip I use when I am upset and not listening properly is to take a notebook with me and write everything down that the vet tells you. It is hard to take things in when it is technical and you are worried, and bladder problems in male cats are very serious and must be treated properly. Bonaparte nearly died before he was operated on, and now he has to follow a special diet, with low calcium bottled water to drink, for the rest of his life.

Good luck, I hope it all works out. But if you are not sure what you are doing or are unable to treat him, get him back to the vet as quickly as you can.

Ring the vets and ask them to go over it all again with you, either on the phone or in person.  Make notes as they do so.
