I am so sorry you have having so much trouble finding work. Have you checked with your surrounding hospitals, nursing homes, re-hab centers. My dad is now in a nursing home and he has a massage therapist work with him every morning. Without him they would not get him out of bed - he is my dads angel.

I know this sounds daft but have you thought about putting the skills that you clearly have to use within your health service? May be look long term at physiotherapy or something like that. I damaged a knee some years ago - 18 - playing cricket. Took me 6 months to even start to walk on it again and now you would never believe it - even though same knee was damaged in an accident at work years later. If I had not had the help of a physio and I recall a massage expert, I guess I would have been resigned to a life on sticks!
Its a thought ?

I agree with Jellybelly, you could try gyms, I know they have massage therapists - and great ones too.
A retirement home is a great idea as well.

I will think good thoughts for you that you get your perfect job.

I was 16 and at school, we used to play with one pad on facing the bowler when batting. Anyway, we needed a couple more runs to seal the match and had overs in hand. I was facing and the padded leg was facing the bowler. I was facing one of the fastest bowlers in the school in a huge match and - well basically, it just went wrong. The ball came hurtling towards me, I stepped forward to pad it away, the ball shot through my legs and caught the knee cap behind and broke some of it. I got three steps and collapsed and naturally, they bowled me out. I had no chance and after that day, I have been terrified of cricket balls. Have never lifted a bat or bowled at anyone now in over 17 - nearly 18 years. Love to watch it and I guess would like to play it again but the memories dont go and thats how it happened.

Does the school have any recommendations on how to present yourself, if you want to be self-employed? I'm sure they are aware that 'massage parlors' and the like have been a euphemism for a long time for other types of 'services'.

As another poster suggested, maybe you could contact home health agencies that service your area, and see whether they have any need for that type of services. They usually employ people as independent contractors for that type of work.

I hope that you're able to get your certification somehow...A lot of physical therapist's offices employ massage therapists, too.

You have gotten such good advice here...all I can add is that I hope you can find a job in your field and not have to put up with sickos thinking a massage means more than just that.

Laura:

Are there any spas in your area? A teacher I work with, who is also a licensed massage therapist, worked the summer at a spa. I would think that you want to get someplace where you can build up a clientele and eventually branch out on your own. Perhaps you could work out a visiting schedule with nail salons or the like, where you would be there on a certain day or days and they could book appointments in advance for you. You could travel between several places.

Off the topic, but how long have you lived in Old Bridge? My ex-husband and a close friend of mine both come from there. As a matter of fact, they used to be next door neighbors there.

oh no.. job hunting sucks especially when you can't find that many to even apply for! It seems we're in the same boat--I graduated in Advertising/Marketing and can't find ANYTHING relatively close and out of state won't hire do to relocation (which I would pay anyhow but it's their policy..).. I know it's incredibly depressing, but I really think if you just keep putting yourself out there someone's bound to snap you up! You're going through the crappy part now, but once you find your niche it will be smooth sailing. At least that's what people keep telling me and I have no choice but to believe them! You should start a certification fund, that would be a step in the right direction.. Just loose change, etc, you'd be suprised how fast it adds up.. I think you'd have a lot more luck with that, heck I'd even stick in on a credit card and pay it off slowly if you can't do anything else. It just seems like something important to have.

If you ever need to vent to a fellow job seeker I'm here for yOU!

You know here we have massage therapists come in to our company once a week. What about doing something like that? Make yourself up a little brochure and go around to some big companies and talk to the HR person. It's a big hit here. And I know the guy that comes here just goes to several different companies every day. Sometimes the companies will supplement so the employees get a discounted rate. Just an idea.
