A friend of mine found this little kitten on the street, and I took her in. I took her to the vet because she has an eye infection, and I found out that she also has roundworms.

Now, when I first got this kitten, her tummy was pretty normal sized. I gave her de-worming medicine on Tuesday and since then her tummy has seemed to have gotten bigger, and bigger.

It is so swollen that it pains me to look at it. Now, she's not in pain, and most times she's really playful. Other times she's just.. so tired and lethargic. She just sleeps and sleeps.

Does she have FIP? I'm really worried. It's been days since the de-worming meds, she only pooped out worms twice, and her stomach isn't getting any smaller, in fact, it's getting bigger.

Please help me! I've never had a kitten before..

Get her back to the vet. It could be that she needs a stronger de-wormer, or it could be something else altogther. :vibes:. that the vet can make her better fast and easy!

I take it these meds were given to you BY THE VET?  If so a follow up to original problem may be alot cheaper then a reg visit(by me its 15-25 depending if its a vet tech or the vet)

Animals in general need a bit of a cushion for money-shots/alter cost along with if things go wrong.

A reg exam by the vet will be far cheaper then a ER visit where its usually 100 or more to just walk in

This is just the beginning of expenses for this kitty. If you don't have the money to treat her worms properly, please consider surrendering her to a no-kill shelter. You will need to get her shots, spay and have money for when/if she needs little trips to the vet.

Please take her back in.

I have to agree with RAFM... Much as you want to help her, and it's obvious you really care and want to do the best you can, she's not a well kitty and needs medical help.  That may just mean you need to take her to the no-kill shelter if you can't afford the vet's fees.

It's hard, and I do feel for you.

I agree about the vet fees. One of my cats was an orphan that I had to pay for all vet fees.  There were five trips to the vet for just the normal kitten things like shots, deworming, and spay.

I *can* pay for all the vet fees, I just don't want to keep taking her to the vet, 3 days after she just went there. I know I need to get her shots and whatnot.

Unfortunately sometimes that is what we have to do.  Sounds to me like you can just manage shots and neutering but will have problems - maybe big ones - if something unexpected comes along.

Whether you *want* to or not isn't the point, it's what you NEED to do. This isn't not *wanting* to go back to the grocery for milk because you forgot it...this is the health of a living creature you committed to taking care of.

If the vet is the one that originally administered the medication to begin with you should just be charged for a followup visit.  It could be the medicine, she might still have worms but it might be something else altogether.  A follow up visit should be much cheaper than the original exam.  Keep us posted if you can.

How's the little one doing?

The bad thing about kittens that young is that they can crash very suddenly.  Just a few days of illness can cause them permanent damage or even kill them.

It's a harsh world for little animals, and there is a good reason cats have multiple litters every year with multiple kittens.

I agree it is a big mistake to adopt a kitten if you are unwilling to take her to the vet every time she needs to and/or can't afford appointments if something goes wrong. Did you really think your kitten would never need more appointments than the annual exams and one operation? Why didn't you think about the fact that like people, cats get injured, infected, and sick, sometimes for long periods of time, and need extra vet trips for treatment? If you are not willing to do what you need to do even if you don't want to do it, you don't deserve to have a pet.

The question isn't "do you want to go to the vet" nobody wants to go to the vet but the fact is that we are responsible for a being that can't communicate with us so in their best interest we do what is necessary for them to live a long and happy life.  I have had animals that require just routine check ups and I have had animals that had health issues and I spent more time and money at the vets then I wanted to but that's what we do as pet parents.  I can tell you for sure that your kitten needs immediate vet attention.  It is not unusual for another round of dewormer needs to be used to get them all and waiting can cause severe health issues for kitten.  Including the worms migrating to her lungs and killing her.  Could it be FIP, yes it could be and if you have other cats hopefully you have kept them apart for a safe period of time.  However, I would start with the worms and have your vet do a fecal, before jumping to FIP.
