A baby near where I live died from being circumsized. I don't know the details but I do know that it did have to do with the fact that the surgery wasn't done properly...or something like that...he took a turn for the worst after it. I'm not really sure whether or not sure if I have any boys whether or not we will get them circumsized. I dont htink that there is a right or wrong answer, I just think it's a personal decision that needs to be made by a husband and wife.

Yes, I heard about that case. If I recall the news article well, the problem was bleeding -- a certain amount of which is to be expected, and the parents were told that. However, the bleeding was heavier than normal and the parents didn't realize there was a problem until it was too late. One of the points the news report sought to make was that circumcision is much riskier on an outpatient basis -- which that case was -- than if the child is kept in the hospital for 24 hours or so for observation. Had the latter been the case, the problem would more than likely have been spotted in time. What a horrific thing to have happen for want of a few hours' professional observation!

I think I read somewhere that there is a 2% complications rate. Of course death is very rare but it does happen. Other complications include pretty scary things like having to have the whole penis removed and the baby has to be transgendered into a baby girl. It's very rare as well but it does happen.

Wow.

I read the article and am sitting here breathing a HUGE sigh of relief that I opted NOT to get my son circumsized. I was horrified by the discription of the procedure and the baby boy's reaction to it

I was extremely lucky to have had an obstetrician who convinced me that it was unneccessary and barbaric. I was one of the people who was going to get it done because hubby is. The doctor told me that if I decided to have it done he wanted me there to watch because it was too easy to send the baby off and not see it for yourself. Now I see what he was talking about.

Hopefully someday we in the 'civilized world' will catch up to the other 97 % of the population who don't mutilate their baby's.
