My 10 year-old Dushka has been diagnosed with the start of arthritis in her hips. The vet has given her Cosequin for a month so see it that makes a difference - she sometimes limps a little, does not jump as easily as she used to and complains when she is moved or picked up. It does seem to be helping after only a week, so it may be the answer for a time at least. But if we have to move on to something else, what have other people been given for arthritic cats? Dushka is not old so I may need to consider long-term management, and so far the vet is only suggesting Metacam, which I have refused. Any ideas?

NO METACAM.  My kitty is 12 years old and she has osteoarthritis.  It can be very painful so she is on GLC 1000 and she goes to a holistic vet and she has laser treatments on her hips 2 to 3 times a month.  It is very similar to acupuncture.  Keep her weight at a good point so she isn't stressing her painful hips and make sure she is able to get to her favorite spots by either buying pet steps or moving the furniture around so she has levels to jump up on.  Also, if you have tile or hardwood floors be sure to have most of the area covered with throw rugs so she doesn't slip when she is walking for running.  Dog people know that slippery surfaces are responsible for many cases of hip dysplasia not genetics.
