Ok, so tonight at about 11:20-11:25, this lady phones and wants to order some platters. We close at 11, but the sheet she had said 12...it's outdated. I told her we were closed, after going through everything with her, b/c how was I to know when she wanted them for? For all I knew she could have wanted them for next week! Anyways, I asked her when she wanted them and she said as soon as possible, which was when I told her we were closed, and then she got mad at me and wanted to speak to my manager (who is on holidays), then she was like "well I have six hungry kids to feed. What am I supposed to do???" I was like, well for starters you could have feed them supper at a decent time, and never mind, what are they doing up at 11:30pm???? I didn't tell that to her, I was just thinking it. Anyways, she said a few more things and then hung up on me. I was like, well whatever. We had everything done, put away and I was starting cashout, and we didn't have enough bread to make these platters and still have enough left over for the morning. So should I have made the platter for her or not? What do you think?? There was the C-Store still open, where you can buy bread, meat, fruit, and pre-packaged subs, and besides that, what were you doing all nite long that you couldn't come over earlier and get them, or go to Pizza Hut and get a pizza, which is better cold/left sitting for awhile than subs....

Anyways, I'm not regretting my decision to not make them, just wondering what everyone else would have done.

I would have done the same thing. But I would have told her I was closed a little sooner.

Don't take crap from ppl, it seems some ppl were put on this earth to just frustrate others.

Thanks Tamme. I get that a lot. "If you're closed, why did you answer the phone???" Umm....b/c it rang maybe??? How am I supposed to know it's you? It could be something important for someone. Anyways, I think her opinion about us being closed when it said we were open would have been the same.

No doubt! If we were up at that time, we would have been hollered at big time! Never mind if we were at someone's place, or on holidays or anything. Bedtime was bedtime. No arguing or getting to stay up. And if you're on holidays does it not make sense to have some stuff on hand so that you can make the kids something to eat if they get hungry? Especially considering that today was a holiday and no stores were open?

just to add, when I call places after a decent time I ask what time they are open until. If it is 9:45 and they say they are open to 10 I make sure to ask if they have enough time to do the order.

I agree with Princess Purr. When it is that late, I always start out by asking, "Is it too late to place an order? If they say they're closing within a half hour, I tell them nevermind. I worked in restuarants (Bennigan's, Red Lobster) when I was in college, and I know how aggravating it is when someone decides 10 minutes before closing that it is time for dinner...

You did the right thing. We get that kind of stuff constantly. Someone will come in 10 minutes before closing time and want something that will take 2 or 3 hours to do. It is so annoying.

one time i was working at taco bell and someone came in at like 12.50 (when we closed at 1) and ordered 14 kids meals!! Luckily we had enough food to make them, but on a normal day I had no problem saying "Um no.." or if they can through at 1:01 I had no problem saying "we're closed." It's a business like any other but people don't really respect it as much.

Doesn't matter what kind of business, that type doesn't respect closing time anywhere. We had a guy come to the door of our store one night at 5 min. after closing time, while we were in the process of shutting the store down and ask to be let in the already locked door. When we told him no, he told us he didn't want to buy anything, he just wanted to look ! Do ya think I let him in ? NOT!

I don't work in a food place, but working in retail I get these quite often. The one thing that helps us with answering the phone after we've closed is by answering it "WalMart Security". Most people either hang up or say that they didn't realize that we were closed. Maybe your work place could come up with some kind of saying like that when you are closed.

BTW...you did the right thing!

Thanks for the support guys! I'm sure my boss would have supported me as well, if she was around (she's on a well deserved holiday right now...well she's back tomorrow, but she's been off for about a week or week and a half now). I mean, seriously, it says right there on the litlle pamphlet thing that she had that said we would like to have 24 hr notice on these things for one, and 2, it takes time to make up these platters....they don't take just 5 minutes to make. And b/c they are "made to order", it can take longer! I wish ppl would think about what they are doing before they do stuff. Would you like someone phoning you and asking you to make say 15 or 30 sandwiches and you're coming to pick them up in 10 minutes? I think not!

Anyways enough about this from me. I'm going to start another thread about something completely different! I'm sick of her (the lady, not any of you!) already!!
