Over the river and through the woods...
So, this weekend is my home town's "Heritage Days", which is basically a big street fair with food, local crafts, historical tours and displays, entertainment...you get the idea. Cumberland is a relatively small town but it started as Fort Cumberland in the Revolutionary War and was run by George Washington himself, so there is quite a bit of history here. You can even go through the tunnels that are left from the fort, and some of the original logs used to build the fort were also used to build a few of the oldest houses in town. It's actually pretty cool. I love local history.

So today's question is: Does your city or town have any kind of festival to celebrate it's heritage and history?

The Calgary Stampede, which runs for 10 days every July (this year is the 100th anniversary). Can't say I'm a fan though, cause I think rodeos are nothing more than glorified animal abuse.

My fair city doesn't have a special day set aside to commemorate it's founding, but we have several days /weekends through-out the year.

We have Dogwood Weekend the first weekend in May to celebrate the 1000s of dogwood trees in our town.

We have a Germanfest in mid-summer to celebrate the German heritage that maybe 75% of our population can claim.

We have also have events to remember the Underground Railroad, and the wonderful preserved log cabins nearby.  I'm sure there are more that I'm forgetting.
