I found a kitten hurt in the parking lot at my work. The front of her face is a little mangled, but only at the tip of the nose and bottom lip. I'm not sure what happened to her. I brought her home and she's been sleeping for almost 2 hours. She can meow, but it's weak sounding. She's coughing a bit and there's blood, but I can't tell if it's from the face or if its internal. I estimate she's 4-6 weeks old. I have water and some canned cat food for her, but she seems to only want to sleep. Can anyone help me? I can't afford a vet, but I got plenty of time. I'll take pictures and upload them as soon as possible.

It's hard to say. If it's just a scraped nose, she should be fine. If it's internal, she'll need a vet or she'll die. I can't make that determination over the internet. Can you find a cat rescue group to take her? Even if you keep her for a while, eventually she'll need to see a vet (for shots, spaying, etc.). So if you really can't afford a vet it's best if you find someone who can.

For now, get some kitten milk replacer and mix it with canned kitten food (Fancy Feast makes a good one), and try to get her to eat that. Put a bit in her mouth to get her interested. Be careful she doesn't inhale any. If she doesn't eat, she definitely needs to see a vet. Kittens that young can't go long without food.

Grab a phone bok and call every cat rescue group in town! Hopefuly you can find someone who will help.

You have done a good thing taking in this kitten. That being said, it really needs to see a vet.  If its as young as you think, its very early to be away from its mama.  It not only needs to be checked for the injuries, but will need shots, dewormer ect. You could contact a rescue who has experience with young kittens, and what they need.  It definatly needs food, and may be dehydrated.  The blood is very concering, especially if it is internal.  I wonder how long its been away from mama.  Did you check the area for other kittens?

Thank you for your quick replies! In the time between the last post and this one I've managed to get her to drink some milk. I didn't know they had kitten milk, so I'll grab some of that ASAP. There's no more bleeding, it's scabbed up around her face where I described. There's a whistle when she breathes. I, in the process of uploading pictures. She stood up for a moment and watched my other cat rub himself in stuff all over the room.

Be careful about allowing her around your other cat. She may have Feline Leukemia so hold off on introductions until she's tested.

Note taken. She ate a little bit of food, but I had to get it in her mouth. Is force feeding her okay as long as she's not throwing it up or rejecting it?

You can make a slurry of wet food and kitten milk and use a syringe to put it in the corner of her mouth so she can swallow it.  Pure kitten milk will work, too, if she's too young for solid food.

There's a good chance she had hidden in a car's engine compartment, or she might have been thrown from a car.  We see all sorts of such things at the shelter.  You can use some blood-warm water to gently clean her face.

You are doing the work of a saint in helping this little one.

Because your little baby girl has gone through enough trauma already, if you take her to the vet I would highly recommend not getting her vaccinated, wormed, or any flea treatments until she is well on her way to recovery. JMHO because her little immune system is already compromised enough with all the trauma, and kitties that are sick should never be vaccinated, etc.

Here's a basic kitten formula that you can make for your wee one (I'm not keen on store bought stuff, especially by Hartz):

This is enough for 2 days for one 1/2 lb kitten's daily needs; you can keep for 1-2 days in fridge.

- 8oz of actual raw goat's milk or Meyenberg goat milk liquid

OR

if using powder

- 8 oz of freshly boiled water with 4 oz powdered goat milk, for example Meyenberg brand which comes in 4 and 12oz sizes

OR if using Mt. Capra: http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.asp ... 89089&at=0 then use 2oz per 8oz of water

- 2 egg yolks (raw) - add when boiled water/powdered goat milk is cooled or it'll cook

- 1 tablespoon of any animal fat e.g. ghee, lard, duck fat

- 50 mg taurine (goat's milk contains a lot but this is insurance)

You'll basically end up with approximately 8oz liquid or 1 cup or 16 tablespoons. Should be given at warmish temp, not hot and not straight out of the fridge, kinda like a human infant's formula, warmish. Test it on your wrist first.

You want give between 1 to 2 teaspoons of this mix every 2ish or so hours. You can use an eye dropper, and with really teensy weensy peeps you can dip a cotton ball and squeeze the ball, but a dropper might be preferred even for wee ones. A pediatric syringe (holds 5ml) also works if it's smooth enough to squirt gently.

BTW, the Ca:phos of goat's milk seems to be about right (kittens need lower ratio than adult cats), so no need to add a calcium supplement or anything else:

Just one article showing how great goat's milk is compared to cow:

Probably more info than you wanted, but thought I would put this out there for you to consider.
Sending lots of prayers and healing vibes for your itty bitty kitty.
