Hello,

Let me start with the fact that I am a
Dog person and though me and my wife
Currently house a 17 yr old long haired cat
I have no knowledge of its younger days

In a morning conversation at my work I
Learned a coworker of mine has a cat that had kittens 5
Days ago..it is his gf's cat an he spoke of
"disposing of the kittens"

I don't really like cats but I love animals in general
I read that weaning starts at 4-6 weeks and by 8-10
Is complete but I don't know if he will wait this
Long.

Sorry for being so long winded but my question is if
There is anyway to separate the kittens early
Or not . He needs a tide home today so I quickly
Volunteered in hope that if there is a way I
Will be taking them. If not I guess I try and talk
Him into weaning them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

We always recommend leaving the kittens with momma cat until they are 10-12 weeks old, even after they're weaned. It really helps with their socialization skills for later on in life. With that being said, if the man is seriously considering "disposing them", then you really have no choice but to take them. Can you take momma cat with you as well? That would ultimately be THE BEST outcome of this situation, as she obviously doesn't seem like she has owners who are responsible enough to even get her spayed. These kittens, being less than a week old, would have a very hard time making it without their momma. You could attempt to bottle feed Kitten Milk Replacement, but it is very tricky and you have to make the formula perfect- not to thick and not too runny, and you have to feed them a certain way to make sure no milk gets in their lungs or that can cause pneumonia. Ultimately though, it sounds like any other situation will be better than the one they are in right now. Good luck and keep us updated.

If you can't get mom and kittens, get just the kittens and bottle feed. Honestly if you are worried about bottle feeding ask a vet to show you how. Mine will for no charge. Then if you have any problems there are several experiences bottle feeders on this site, myself included, that can help you out. Just so you know what you are getting into if the kittens are just days old they are going to need to be fed every 2 hours around the clock. Yes that means overnight and very little sleep for you. If both you and your wife would be willing to take shifts it would make your lives much easier. Please let us know what happens.

So morning break has passed at my workplace
I believe that I have annoyed this guy enough that
He is willing to wait for 2-3 weeks
I know this will help significantly
But what would be the new minimum wouldn't 5 be
A better number ?
I don't want to upset him too much
Is 3 ample?

You can start solids around 4 weeks, so I would say try to push him to that.  Anyway to contact the girlfriend to work it from that end?  Remind him that the cat will be pregnant in a few weeks if she is not spayed.

Second these advices!

Tell him YOU are willing to help him and take the cat to the vet for doing the spaying, if he feels it takes too much time and effort from him.

With a little luck he will agree, and perhaps even promise to pay for the surgery, as long as you help with practical details.

It is possible to handraise, but if you can talk him into letting them be with mom as long as possible, is the best.  Mom is always best, right?

Promise also you will help with finding new homes... Same principle. If he is lazy the easiest is to "dispose them" the problem.  But if he get help there is a good chance he will wait - he doesnt really has any problem, the mom has.

Tx a lot for caring!

Good luck!

I would ask him if the mother cat and kittens can just come and stay with you for 8 weeks. Then once you get them there tell him the vet recommends 12. I would be nice but I would not trust him to do right by those cats. I would try and move them if I could.
