Hi all...I'm a little worried about my cat Harley.

First let me say that I know cats sleep alot and so does Harley, but he also usually has alot of energy during certain times of the day and night.

About sundown he usually likes to play. Right now its just after one am and by this time of night he's usually wide awake and driving me crazy by jumping on everything that moves, leaping on my make up dresser and purposely batting my stuff off the dresser and on to the floor.

He's a young cat BTW. I rescued him in December of this past year and I estimated he was about 5 or 6 weeks old at that time. So I guessed he was born in mid to late September making him about 9 months old now. So obviously were' not talking about a really old cat.

So today instead of his usual sleeping, eating and playing pattern..He's just slept , the entire day. Since this morning. I left him asleep on my bed and went shopping this afternoon. He usually gets up when he sees me gone, but when I came home he was still sleeping in my bed. I wasn't too worried yet, but I was surprised

But like I said, its just after one am and he still has not left my bed. Even to use the litter box. He will open his eyes and not quite sit up, but he'll pick his head up and look at me for a bit and occasionally he'll get up but only to walk to another place on the bed.

He hadn't eaten or drank anything that I could see either, even though I put out dry food and fresh wet food. I even picked him up and brought him to his bowl. He sniffed it a bit and then jumped right back on my bed and curled up and went to sleep.  So I was really getting worried, so I got him his favorite cat treats and put some of those under his nose and tapped him so he'd wake up and he did eat those. So at least he's able to eat something which was a bit of a relief, but I'm still concerned that he continues to sleep.

Is this normal for a cat to occasionally take a day where he just wants to sleep? It has been very hot today. We have airconditioning but even with the AC its pretty hot and if I'm hot, I'm sure its worse for him with his fur coat. I live in S.Florida BTW, so this is the start of the really warm humid time of year.

I hope that its the weather making him just want to rest all day and not some other issue. Has anyone ever had a cat that did this and what was the outcome? Should I be worried or is this normal occasionally? If I have to take him to the vet I will, but I dont want to take him if he doesnt need it. I have no problem spending money on my baby, he's my heart and Ill give him whatever he needs to maintain good health, he's had his shots, been neutered etc,  but like many cats he hates going to the vet and  I'd like to spare him that trauma unless there's no other choice.

Anyway, if anyone has any advice, words of wisdom or comfort...I'd really like to hear them. Thanks.

I'm going through the lethargy thing too with my cat, but mine is vomiting as well.  If he is still this way tomorrow, you need to take him to the vet.  They will run some blood tests and look for whats causing his lethargy.  Unfortunately, as I know all too well, lethargy, lack of eating/drinking, and vomiting are general symptoms exhibited by most cats that are sick.  It can be nothing or it can be very serious.

A vet trip is the only way to be sure.  I will tell you this though, don't let him not eat for more than a couple days as he can become extremely sick (hepatic lipidosis).  I'm currently trying to assist feed my cat who is on day 3 of not eating.  Keep an eye out for him urinating outside of the litter box, or straining when he tries to urinate as male cats are very prone to blockages which are also life threatening (been there, too... I'm turning into a real cat expert).

Good luck with Harley, though.  Hopefully it's nothing serious.

Thank you rattleme.

I am happy to report that about half hour after I posted that big long message, Harley got up and used the litterbox. Then he ate a little. He wanted to go outside, for a bit so I let him go on the patio and explore and then I brought him back in as I don't want him out for too long yet. He doesnt wander, he just stays in the backyard, but right now I'd like him inside so I can watch him...Anyway, I am so relieved and I appreciate your advice. Good luck with your cat and I hope he'll be fine.
