Hi everyone im new here and this is my first post.

Im a ragdoll cat breeder in the uk. I had a litter born two weeks ago, we have six blue ragdolls, all doing really well, but a couple of days ago i noticed a couple of the kittens have sticky eyes, i am bathing them every day with cool boiled water just wondering if its a bit of an infection that needs to be seen by my vet or if this can happen and is normal and nothing to worry about.

Any advice will be appriciated.

Thank you

Amanda

Hi and welcome :)

Not a problem I've had in my litters, but if it's not clearing up or the eyes are oozing I'd be seeing the vet.

You being a breeder, I would recommend you to keep in touch with your vet as a matter of fact, and phone and ask in such situations.  He will answer as you ARE his paying patient.

ALL cat owners should do so, but for breeders of pure breeds it is doubly natural, not only for the love of their cat, but also of commercial interests, every kitten riding on 1000 dollar apiece. Not to even mention some of them will bear "your" genes down the river of life.

You are of course welcome to ask here too, to breedden your base of knowledge. And please tell us also afterwards what the vet told you, to bredden OUR base of knowledge!   :)

As you Lestaterys already do try with basic home remedies, I would suggest you put in some kitchen salt in this water before boiling.   1 tea-spoon per litre, there about.   (Dont spare too long, better make new. This useful for eye bath, scratches, cleansing of minor wounds, etc etc.  Pour on freely).

Like they do in hospitals.

Im not sure using the fluid cool is good. I myself would use body temp, so it will not feel unpleasant for the kittens, nor making them shut the eyelid in protest.

Welcome to the TCS site and our Forums!

Good luck!

D[=[/].
Thank you for your help. I phoned my vet this morning he adviced to bath with salt water as you adviced and if their eyes are still sticky on Friday to take mum and all kittens to see him. He said not to worry as this is quite normal. But to be sure to take them in. Cxxxx

$1,000 per kitten?  !!!   In a lot of the UK for 'ordinary' breeds £400 ($600) is much more like it.

Not sure why that factors into it anyway. My litters get the best of care, regardless of their 'value' or being a rare breed, simply because it's the right thing to do.

I don't know either, but new breeds cost more here, and so do kittens in the SE of England.  But the woman trying for £450 for hre red-point kittens ended up with them on her hands for ages and then getting £200 each!  I gather it was a gay couple who were worried she would object.  Clearly they know nothing about the pedigree cat scene in the UK.  There are very few straight man in it!
