Hi everyone,

I am needing some advice regarding worms in a cat.  I got Oreo about 5 weeks ago now and even though the vet treated her for fleas and worms I just saw one in her bottom!!!!!  I took her to the vet just yesterday for vaccines and a re-check to confirm she is now OK to spay and the vet did not want to bother with a fecal (said cats digestion track makes it dangerous to take a fecal sample?). The vet is saying just re-treat her with the Advantage II, but it has only been 1 week since her last application?

Anyway, Oreo is still looking pregnant even after having lost her kittens (NOT able to breed again since being with me!!!) and has REAL bad gas
The worm was alive, on it's way out of her bottom, round, cream and gross, LOL!  I think she ate it
  SOOOO GROSS!!!!!!

What more can I do to get rid of these disgusting parasites?  I have a six year old and do not want him to get anything

Sounds like a tapeworm segment.  Advantage II is flea control, she needs a wormer as well.  In the UK we only bother with faecal samples for cats with ongoing problems - for worms we simply treat, usually with Milbemax which is a tiny pill that deals with roundworm and tapeworm.  You have to know the cats weight to get the right dose.  And I can't see why getting a faecal sample would hurt the cat - they produce several a day in their litter tray!

I found the following about the flea control product:

Tip: Under normal conditions Advantage II is effective for a month. However, in case of severe flea infestation, retreatment may be necessary earlier than four weeks. Do not re-treat more often than once every seven days. After flea control is obtained, return to a monthly treatment.
So I wouldn't worry about retreating with Advantage.  However, the house or the bit of it she was in might need treating again.  Do wash her bedding hot (60C) and if you can, dry outside.  A UK link about flea treatment & products:

I gather Milbemax isn't available in the US.  Suggest you tell the vet the cat definitely has tapeworms, and ask for a suitable treatment.  She probably has roundworms as well.

This is UK advice but tapeworms are tapeworms...

There is a list of the common effective preparations available in the UK at the end of the page.  Panacur is easy to get but not effective against all tapeworms.

I wonder if it was Advantage multi - known over here as Advocate, it's a flea and worm treatment but doesn't cover tapeworm. I would go to another vet for starters, and ask for a wormer that covers tapeworm.
