Is it time to get her spayed?

So we brought Binky and her son Cookie in. He is 5 weeks old. There is a Spay/Neuter low cost clinic this weekend, and she is definitely in heat. However, Cookie is not weaned or ready to be weaned yet. The next clinic is in a month however. Her noises are about to drive us up the wall. I am not sure we can wait another month so he could get fixed too. Also, should I wait to get her fixed until he is a bit older? Or would feeding him formula be a suitable replacement for the last couple of weeks?

Ask the vet perhaps?  if surgeon lays the incision in the flank, it doesnt disturb them much. Especielly as she doesnt has a big litter who need all the teats.

Spaying in the heat is more difficult though. OK for an experienced surgeon, but NOT otherwise.

Good luck!

Can you call the clinic to ask the question?

Personally, I'd lean towards getting it done this weekend. He'd be another week older then. Here's typical kitty development: http://www.kitten-rescue.org

But most people, when they rescue kittens without mums, try to start weaning them to canned food around this time. (And there's tips on how to do that on the Kitten Rescue website). :hugs:

So we have an appointment for both of them a week from Wednesday. The vet recommended we wait an extra week so Cookie could be mostly weaned. Binky will get fixed, tested, shots, dewormed, the whole biz. Cookie is too young to fix yet but he will also be tested and dewormed. He will be 7 weeks old.

They are both thriving. Cookie has grown and Binky is not quite so thin, though she is still too thin for our liking. We can't see her ribs under her coat but her hips are jutting out. Her diarrhea has stopped (we think it was the stress of coming inside + change of food.) But her coat is gleaming. We have ordered a grain free dry food and hopefully that will be our last food change.

OH PHEW.... I was just catching up here and was going to suggest going ahead and get her spayed at the first opportunity and just bottle feed Cookie!!! But you are able to get them in sooner - both of them. Hopefully Cookie will be at least two pounds. That is the minimal weight required to neuter/spay a kitten. OH things sound like they are going very well and I am so happy for that :happy3: :hugs: Your doing a great job!!!:clap: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

He won't be two pounds by then, however we're only having him go in for a checkup and deworming. That should help him get to 2 pounds. :)

OH just saw this! Yes - the deworming will absolutely help him gain some strength and weight as I bet he does have some worms - most kittens do.
