Firstly, I want to thank those that responded to a thread from a few weeks back about Lucy's cough. The vet could find no explanation for it but suggested a process of elimination from litter type to allergens.

She was updated on her vacs and we went home. I haven't heard a cough since.

Now....Tuesday afternoon, I noticed she was obviously limping for unknown reasons. Of course this had me flipped out and up all night with worry. She is still walking, eating, drinking, purring like crazy when combed, chasing random insects that may get in the house, showing interest in hey catnip toys, and sleeping with me.
She has NOT, though, asserted her Alpha Cat status on the other cat lately, which has always been a daily thing.

But....I can tell this cat doesn't feel well. She is moving, in general, at a slower pace. She doesnt move around as much, either, and sometimes will sleep in strange places during the day (randomly in the middle of the floor or under the bed). She also has growled at ME (she never does that) when I try to pick her up or try to get overly invasive of her paws to look at them. Shes never been one to be picked up, but it only resulted in little whines before.

When she's sleeping on me, I can touch her legs and paws (and in between her toes) with little resistance (as its always been), but there is still something bothering her somewhere...I just don't know where.

MY husband said that Lucy leapt out of arms the other day and landed a little hard. He thinks that is all it is and we should just watch her. The limp isn't as obvious today, but I've noticed twice now that when she tries to jump on our bed or the back of the recliner, her hind legs kind of trail behind and don't land together. It reminds me of what would be on a cartoon of where a child is trying to climb something and his feet are trying to get up with him. Does it happen all the time? No. Twice today, but I've seen her do this before with the recliner since its a higher jump.

Lucy rarely goes outside. If she does (and she does ask and did today), she stays right off the back steps to eat some grass. She's never out for more than a couple of minutes and is never left alone.

I'm terrified. Maybe I'm overreacting, but I am truly scared. I worship this cat and don't know if I can stand the thought of anything happening to her.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

(typing from the iPhone so forgive typos and improper autocorrects! ;)

I just wanted to say first of all that your cat is absolutely gorgeous, I saw that video of her, and her fur is so strikingly beautiful!!

One of my cats coughs the same way, it is not very often but when she does, it scares me to death as well. It sounds so horrible I expect to see something awful come out of her. And she doesn't really ever vomit anything up either.

As for the limp and the symptoms you describe- first off, her growling when you try to touch her paws, I think she is picking up on the fact that you are seeking out her paws for inspection and that you have a higher than normal amount of attention and concern about her and it is making her uncomfortable, and I think that is also why she doesn't want to be picked up.

As for the sleeping in unusual places, and moving at a slower pace, I would be concerned about that. And yes there could be a connection between that and her cough. I hate to bring up the possibility of cardiomyopathy but it can't be ruled out- http://maxshouse.com/hypertrophic_cardiomyopathy.htm

I know the vet did an exam and probably listened to her chest for signs of fluid or a murmer, so it is probably unlikely that there is any connection, but you are her mom and it sounds like you have already detected changes that are causing you concern. Unfortunately I don't know if this can be easily diagnosed and most vets are not going to be looking for it- if you brought Lucy in for a cough, the first thing they would check is for allergies, URI,- the obvious.

I hope this helps, maybe others on this forum can help shed light on Lucy's issues. I say, trust your instincts and find a really good diagnostic vet.

I remember my very first cat showing symptoms of not being able to get up into chairs easily all of a sudden (she was 6 months old at the time), being slower to move around but eating, playing and affectionate. It turned out she had an intestinal infection and it was the pain in her gut that was making jumping up anywhere very difficult.  Since Lucy is growling at you when you try to pick her up and is having difficulty jumping up, perhaps it is abdominal pain that is causing these symptoms - just a thought.

Thank you! I noticed today, her hind legs were fine with jumping, but that she is babying her right front paw. She was in the same spot on the bed this morning where she was when I fell asleep....that's a little weird. Usually she gets up with my husband and then comes back to me. When she did sit up, she did baby that front paw...kind if held it up before laying back down.

Maybe she's compensating for the front by overusing the hind?

I'm taking her in this afternoon to know for sure.

Examiniation a few weeks ago seemed clear. Ironically, my first car was dx with early hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in 1991. Cat lived to be 18 years old:). Cardizem and baby aspirin;). Lucy isn't as extreme as that cat was....but I'm getting a second opinion, too.

Lucy ended up being ok.....the vet manipulated her foot/leg and it was fine.  He thought maybe she landed on it wrong or something to that extent.  She eventually stopped limping and is perfectly fine to this day.

If I were you, I would take her in to be seen....Lucy didn't growl at me so your cat may have something more or maybe she is just more sensitive to it?  I think that is the only way you will know for sure.

I would recommend seeing a Veterinarian.

Kitties can land too hard on their paws and injure them. Or their nails can grow too long and make it hard for them to walk.
