My sweet Coco is in the kitty hospital tonight.  A brief history:
  • Bladder Stones/surgery in 2008
  • Fatty Liver Disease and Liver Biopsy 2010
  • Hyperthyroidism diagnosed 2010
  • Large tumor near thyroid removed last week.  Thyroid gland was not removed. Pre surgeryT4 was 11.5.
  • Tumor sent for histology at Auburn.  Still waiting for results
I took Coco in to have her 1 week incision check today.  The vet weighed her and found out she has lost another .5 lbs since last week.  Her temp was 105.4.  Ran CBC and Chem panel to compare to pre-surgery tests and check for infection.  WBC, RBC were both normal.  Platelets were slightly increased, but not enough for alarm.  ALT was 475.  It was 1087 pre-surgery.  The only test he did not run tonight was T4.  She remained on a low dose of tapazole (2.5 mg 2x a day (pre surgery was 10mg 2x a day)) post surgery until we could get results confirming if the tumor is thyroid tissue.  He will run a T4 in the morning after she is 24 hrs tapazole free.

The vets are completely stumped with Coco.  3 of the 4 in the office have conferred and the only somewhat plausible explanation they can come up with is that the tumor was producing such a high level of thyroid hormone that removing it sent her into a tailspin.  The low dose of tapazole may have further complicated it.

I'm at a loss.  I want Coco better, but I don't want her to suffer.  I keep wondering if I will know when she is ready to cross the rainbow bridge or if I will be too busy trying to save her to notice.  My almost 2 year old daughter asked tonight "Where Coco?" and it broke my heart.  Having a sick kitty is so, so hard.

It really and truly is the hardest thing in the world to deal with, when our furbabies get so sick. Coco has had a rough go of it but she is so very lucky to have had your love and care throughout all of her health issues. I think we somehow know when enough is enough, and you seem very aware of your feelings. You will know when saving her becomes more for you than her. Coco will also have a say in this, they always do. :rub: Mega vibes for your kitty tonight and the hopes that the tumor biopsy results give you some hope and will be good news. :cross: How sweet of your little two year old. AWWW. Coco is so loved :heart3: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

A morning update on Coco:

Her fever is gone.  Her T4 check shows that her levels have dropped in half from what they were last week prior to surgery.  Last week, they were at 10.  Today they are at 5.  We are going to weekly T4 checks and keeping her on the low dose of tapazole until we see the levels stabilize.  As far as the weight loss, the expect it to continue until the levels are stable.  We are going to feed her a higher protein, higher calorie diet for a few weeks and see if we can add some weight back.

The vet is now cautiously optimistic about her chances at a full recovery.

After a week off of the tapazole, her levels are back through the roof.  We are trying low dose tapazole and the Hill's prescription y/d to see if her kidneys can handle the I-131 treatment.  If they can't, we will have to put her to sleep.  I can't let her waste away and suffer for my own selfish reasons.
