Hi all, I was gifted with a 6 week old baby boy two weeks ago. He is small for his age due to malnourishment, but my vet told me that by his teeth development we can be sure he was 6 weeks. He has been diagnosed with Herpes in the eye, and tested positive (slightly) for FHIV. We will retest in a few weeks, as my vet said he may only be carrying the antibodies from his mom and may not actually have the virus. However, his eye was bad off. We have treated with antibiotics for 10 days, drops, and lysine supplements in his food. He is on the critical care food from Science Diet. The eye mess has all but cleared up but there is no visible pupil and his eye is all one shade of dark blue/gray. I think he is probably blind in that eye but will it have to be removed as long as it doesn't seem to be affecting him in any way? He is playing, eating, and just perfectly normal! Thanks!!~

The best person to ask is your vet, next time you see him or her.  Hope this kitten brings happiness into your house.

It is wonderful that you are taking such very good care of your new kitten; it's always heartening to read these posts in the midst of others where we all want to scream "take the cat to the vet, NOW".

Did the vet believe the eye could be saved when treatment was started? Sometimes, they will assess the situation as being unable to save the eye and so remove it rather than try treatment. Call your vet and ask him. Since you paid for a vet visit and treatments, he shouldn't mind answering a question over the phone. I may well be a "wait and see" answer, and it will depend how much the eye bothers your kitten.

Glad to hear he is enjoying his life in every way, and you are enjoying his company. Let's hope he isn't FIV+, but even if he is it's not a big deal. I have an 18 year-old cat who is FIV+ and he is very resilient and healthy.
