My 9 month old kitten, Cicada, is at the vet today.  She didnt eat all day yesterday.  She was not feeling well at all, just not acting herself.  There was some diarrhea in the litter box, and some clear mucus gel type stuff.  I took her to the vet as a walk in this morning.  The vet called, and said they did xrays, and she has a lot of "digestant" in her colon.  She didnt see any blockages.  They have her on subq fluids.  No temp.  She said she probably ate something weird.   She said it definatly wasnt cat food.  She does catch a lot of rodents (I think they are voles or small mole type things about the size of a mouse).  Ive never seen her eat them though.   She couldve I guess.  Really, she could have eaten anything.  She loves food, especially human food.  My vet said shes gonna check her this evening, and probably keep her overnight.  She said if shes feeling better, or overly stressed, she will send her home tonight.  She said that with that much stuff in her colon it may take a few days to pass, and for her to feel better. I know shes in great hands.  I love my vet, and have so much confidence in her.

I guess I just wanted some of the all powerful TCS vibes for her recovery, and just wanted to vent about it.  Thanks for listening!

I know its tough leaving them at the vet by themselves, I'm always a wreck when I do. You've done the right thing and I'm sure everything will turn out  just fine
Sending positive healing vibes to Cidada!

Thanks so much Violetxx! It is hard leaving her.  I just realized, I misspelled her name.  Its actually Cicada, like the bug.  Your post made me notice.  I wouldnt have mentioned it, but I want any vibes to go in the right direction
!!  I edited it in my post.  THANKS again! It means a lot!

So, an update on my little Cicada..... The vet called this evening, and she is going to have to stay the night there
.  I feel so bad for her.  My vet said her blood work only showed that she was dehydrated.  They are going to give her more fluids in the morning.  She ate a tiny bit of bland diet canned food at the vet, but only when fed by hand.  My vet is also hoping she will go in the litter box so she can get a fecal test.  She said I can probably pick her up in the morning, after fluids.  I just hope she does pass whatever she ingested, and that is that.  I tend to over worry about anything having to do with my babies.

I know its hard, but they want whats best for her. Just keep sending positive energy her way.

Does the vet have any idea what she may have eaten? I would take this time to inspect your house (maybe she ate a cat toy) or it could be anything really, you'd be surprised what they put in their mouths especially at that age. Have they considered giving her an enema or laxatives to help get things moving?

I just got her home about an hour ago.  She seems ok.  She was really happy to see me.  At the vet, the only thing that came out was that clear gel like substance.  They said there was no bacteria at all in it.  Her colon is inflamed.  On the way home, she went in her kennel.  That was a mixture of clear gel, and diarrhea.  At the vet they gave her "Purina Veterinary Diets, EN, Gastroenteric" canned food, and sent me home with some.  She said to only feed her that, and a tsp of canned pumpkin 2x per day.  At the vet, she only ate when fed by hand.  When we got home I put some canned in a bowl, and she chomped it right away like she was starving.  She didnt eat it all though.  My vet told me to keep her isolated, so I can keep an eye on what shes eating, drinking, and what is coming out.  She want me to call her tomorrow with an update.

No enema or laxatives, I think because something IS coming out, and my vet thinks when she finally passes it all, it will come out as diarrhea. I dont know that we will ever find out what it was that she ate.  She is indoor/ outdoor, and it couldve been anything (she is inside most of the time, always at night, and when she is outside, shes mostly sunbathing. She does hunt, but ive never seen her eat anything she catches).  Im just keeping my fingers crossed that she will improve.  Thanks, you guys, for your good vibes, Im a firm believer in that making a difference.

I'm glad you got her home

That's interesting that a gel like substance is coming out, I've never heard of that before. Unfortunately I wish I knew more about this sorta stuff (cat nutrition is my main focus). All I know is that you need to give her lots of love because I'm sure she's a little shaken up. Hopefully everything will pass through her in the next few days and the pumpkin should help. I'll continue to send her healing vibes until the next update.

Regards,

-Holly

P.S.- I'd love to see some pics of her!

This is Cicada with my dog Zada.  Sorry about the blurriness of the first one, but its just so darn cute!  I included the second one because you can kinda see her cute little polydactal feet (extra toes).  These were taken a few months ago, right after she got spayed (hence the shaved belly).

She seems a little better as the day has gone on.  She is being really affectionate.  She is eating some.

That's good to hear!! Eating is a good sign, that must mean she is feeling better.

Oh she is beautiful. She resembles my Black Bear Cat quite a bit. I adore black cats. Your Cicada and my Black both have red points in there fur (you can see it better in my avatar album photo).

Hope she goes to the bathroom soon!!

Update on Cicada.  She seems much better.  She is eating. She ate 1 whole can, plus 1/4 of another.  Plus the pumpkin ive been mixing in.  She is having diarrhea, which is better than just clear gel right?  She hasnt had a lot of diarrhea, so there still some that needs to pass before shell be 100%, but she seems to be on the mend.  She is being really affectionate.  She is acting much more alert, and happier
.  I have her isolated, so I can monitor her better.  My boyfriend carried her out to see the other cats, and her mother tried to attack her.  They are usually pretty good friends.  This also happened after Cicada got fixed.  It took about a week before they got back to normal.  I guess its just the smell of the vets on her.  Mean Mama!

Holly-- Your Black Bear is very beautiful.  They do look a like.  I have 2 black cats.  Cicada, and her brother.  My other cat is a tortie. She is their mom (I found mama, Cricket, as a very pregnant stray, she had 7 kittens, and I found homes for all but 2 so of course I kept them).  Thank you so much for all your support.  You really helped

I am sorry to hear she is not feeling well.  Have you checked to see if the food you feed her is one of the recalled foods?

http://www.avma.org/petfoodsafety/recalls/2012/default.asp

Pet Food Recall Update May 7, 2012

Diamond announced the expansion of its volunatry recall of pet foods today. The recall now includes nine brands of dry pet food formulas manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 2, 2012. The concern is potential Slamonella contamination. Both dog and cat foods are now included on the list. Natural Balance, Canidae and WellPet LLC have also issued recalls.

Manufacturers affected with links for specific information:
According to the CDC, 14 cases of Salmonella poisoning in humans have been linked to pet food contamination in 9 states.

“People who became ill, the thing that was common among them was that they had fed their pets Diamond Pet Foods,” CDC spokeswoman Lola Russell said.

And “multiple brands of dry pet food” produced by Diamond at their South Carolina facility have been linked to some of the human Salmonella infections.

Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product.

Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning in dogs and cats:
  • Lack of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Shock
  • Weight Loss
  • Mucous in stool
  • Increased heart rate
If your pet has consumed the recalled product and shows any of these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. Also, pets can be carriers of Salmonella prior to showing symptoms.

If you are unsure if the product you purchased is included in the recall, or if you would like replacement product or a refund, you can contact Diamond Pet Foods via a toll free call at 1-866-918-8756.

Thanks tjcarst for the info.  Its great that you are getting that out to people.

No, she didnt eat any recalled food, thank goodness!  She is doing much better now.  In fact she is totally back to her old self.  I guess I will never know exactly what it was she got into.

Thanks again for putting the info out there.

She is doing great!  Back to her normal self.  Because I had her isolated, it took a few days for Cricket to accept her back into the family.  Now everyone is getting along though.

The other black cat is Hex.  He is Cicadas littermate.  I know, we shouldve named him a bug name too, but we werent planning on keeping him, Those black cats are hard to find homes for, for some reason.  I love them too though!  He is one of the sweetest, most openly friendly cats Ive ever met.

By the way, what are you doing with insects for the summer? Just curious.

Thanks Feralvr!  It means a lot to have everyone here to lean on when something like that happens.  Zada loves her kitties!  I have 3 dogs and 3 cats, and Zada is the cats favorite!  They all love eachother though.
I am so glad your cat is doing better.
Thanks so much blueyedgirl!  I really appreciate all the good energy you all put out there!

Glad to hear it wasn't food poisoning and she's feeling better.  Also glad to hear her cat buddies are friendlier!
