hi all.  i'm not new to cats, but this is the first time i've ever had a truely feral cat.  she's about 4 months old and newly weaned from her mother.  she is eating well and uses the litter box, for which i am very thankful.  she is very scared though and is always hiding.  i have her in my bedroom, away from my other cat, with most places to hide blocked off, but she still has plenty of hiding places.  i'm able to pick her up and pet her, she purrs like crazy.  but when we are done, she goes back to hiding.  plus she has been yowling like crazy.  i think she might be in heat, but are there other reasons for the yowling?  she's so tiny and adorable.  i just named her sammy.

i was going to go ahead and introduce the two cats to each other, but after reading on this site and another site, i have decided it is too soon.  plus i am afraid my current cat, smoke, will attack the little kitten.

Welcome to the site !!!! :D :clap: Thanks for taking in Sammy :rub: I would not introduce the kitten to your other cats YET. Too soon. Also, I would get her spayed right away, immediately. Tested for FeLK/FIV, shots and dewormed. Make sure she is parasite free before you allow the other cats to use the same litter box. A negative stool sample. The biggest mistake most people make is moving too soon and pushing too hard to want the new kitty a part of the family. When things get rushed, then things go bad, fast. Best to keep the kitten confined until it is completely socialized, vetted and spayed.

It is a great sign that Sammy allows you to hold her and she purrs. It is totally normal for her to dash off to her hiding space when you put her down or start to leave. When she starts to feel really safe/secure and starts to trust you more, that behavior will diminish. Being a feral kitten, you have her young age in your corner, she should turn into a very loving, loyal little kitty rather quickly. :bigwink:

Here is a great article written by a longtime member here on TCS that will help you out too. http://www.catnipchronicles.com/may2012/laurie.htm
