This never made any sense to me: When I had Wilbur, a shorthaired mutt, he often had poop stuck on his tail and rectum. But neither of my 2 female American shorthairs ever had this problem. Why would one cat oftne have poop stuck under his tail but not two others using the same litterboxes?

Hi!  I had mostly female cats and no problem.  I now have a male and a female cat and the female is no problem.  However my male does have the issue you discussed, but rarely.  When my male has your male's problem I take him to the vet to be shaved on his bottom.

Only one of my 3 cats has had this problem (just occasionally, thank goodness.)  I've always figured it was a difference in squatting styles.  He experiments with funky positions, I guess, because he is the only one who will occasionally pee over the side too.

I've only had to help him get clean once.  Poor fellow usually grooms himself down there (yuck, right?)  And, most of it gets deposited around the house (fun.)  I can tell he tried to leave it in the litterbox because it has litter all over the little pieces that are deposited.

So I guess it could be gender-related.

I seriously did think about having a vet shave him back there, but was afraid he would look weird.

It does look weird, but probably feels better for him than having the stuff stuck to him.  My male cat has that problem occasionally too, and I've had him shaved a couple times.

Our cat Molly has the same issue and she goes in regularly for a hygiene trim.  It looks a little bit silly but it's easier than dealing with the mess
