It needs to have garlic added. It's the taste of the garlic the fleas don't like.

I can't say with 100% certainty whether it works or not but, our small dog Abby is currently unable to take her regular flea medication due to a medical condition she is being treated for so we've had her on Brewers Yeast for almost a month now and have not seen a single flea, I even take her to the dog park several times a week. Now, I do bathe her in a tea tree oil shampoo (it is an aversive for fleas as well) and another containing benzoyl peroxide as soon as we get home from the park but even then, I have not seen a single flea come off her.

I'm happy with the results thus far but, I will be going back to her regular flea medication post treatment, I just don't want to risk it. (her flea, heartworm and parasite control are all in one pill).

Unfortunately, garlic is toxic for cats. I do remember reading something about raw apple cider vinegar as a natural pest control, but I didn't bookmark it. :anon:

LDG - the amount of garlic in brewers yeast formulas has been proven safe in cats, you just have to make sure you are getting a high quality formula.

I didn't know brewer's yeast came packaged with garlic. :lol3: I know garlic is used in small amounts in some pet foods. But I actually thought the Heinz Body anemia response was cat-specific (just that many cats have the gene that triggers it).

But thanks. :)

Brewer's yeast is high on the allergy list for many cats so I would recommend caution in using it.

Can you provide some substantiating evidence of this? I've seen many lists of foods that cats are commonly allergic to but I've never seen brewers yeast on one.

If you aren't using the one with garlic you are not protecting against fleas, you are simply providing an additive that will help with their skin and coat, which is fine, but don't expect it to help control fleas.
