Hello! My name is Ann. I am a SAHM and a military wife living in upstate NY. My husband and I have two sons. We are big animal lovers.  We have 3 dogs, a chihuahua, a jack-a-bee, and a border collie.

My oldest son had a little grey cat for 11 years and lost her a year ago.

We had a long hair B&W cat for 4 years that we all formed a deep emotional bond with. He had been a stray kitten. I had him tested for everything under the sun when I took him in and he was negative for all disease. But sadly during one of his rare escapes he must have come upon a cat that was infected with FelV. We had no idea until he fell ill and the vet told us. The kinder thing in his condition was to have him put to sleep.

Now after two terrible cat-less months we all have adopted two cats from the ASPCA. Verizon "Do you hear me Meow?" a 4 year old short hair B&W and Diana Goddess of the Hunt 1yr old short haired grey.

Our new little princess was at home the moment she came out of her carried. She stalks the dogs, attacks my husband's ethernet cable, and bounces into my oldest son's bed at night.

Verizon, who was very loving and cuddly at the ASPCA is a wreck. He clearly misses his old owner and paces the house crying and looking. He follows us expecting something. We have tried petting, treating, milk, play and a host of other things. Really have no idea what he wants. He claws at the backdoor and rattles the screen door in front wanting to go outside. Sometimes he waits for someone to come in and tries to dash out. He gets angry when we pick him up to put him in a secure location. He started being vocal about his dismay. Grumbling that turned to a low growl and now an out and out hiss. He started batting claws out and mouthing our hands.

Today my family and I were really starting to think he hated us. After all he seems so desperate to get away. I called the ASPCA today and let them know it might not be working out. We love him, but dont want him miserable. I started looking up information on the internet and came across this site. TXCATMOM gave me a good lift me up and some options such as Feliway. After all he hasn't been with us long more patience is definitely required for him to settle in. In contrast to Diana it looks bad. But when we step back and rationalize his situation we have a lot more hope then a few hours ago.

Thanks for reading! Hope to have more positive happy tales in the furture.

Where my cats are
Welcome to TCS!

I'm so sorry things haven't gone super smooth for Verizon.  I'm guessing you alraedy posted in the Behavior forum.  Poor kitty.  I've heard so many good things about Feliway; my vet even recommended me getting it before my 2nd baby was born to help my one kitty with that transition.

One of my mother's cats took a while to accept the new family.  They kept her in one bedroom for a while and we all spent time alone with her in there.  That helped for sure.  Now she rules the roost there.  Even keeps the dogs in line with her 'iron paw.'
Hopefully things will work out just fine for you guys in the end!

Verizon is doing much better with the introduction of chicken flavor treats. As it turns out he is fussy about his food. Chicken and Turkey are on the menu. Beef is tolerated, and Fish is right out of the question. Good thing Diana doesn't care. Both are going in their litter pans and no spraying, I am happy to report.

Verizon is always two steps behind my husband. When he leaves for work in the morning, I am serenaded by the most mournful wailing. Verizon has taken to climbing to the the kitchen window to watch for my husband's car. Which works out well. I have time to get the puppy parade fed and out the door into their yard. Then I can feed the cats in peace.

Although Verizon's desire to be outside has inspired us to plan a cat enclosure in the yard. Verizon has my schedule down pat and is waiting at the door when I'm trying to get to the garden. Today my husband laughed at how Verizon was guarding the door. I was reminded of Gandolf from LotRs "You Shall Not Pass!" We tried the harness on him. He laid down in protest. Diana walked well on it, as long as she had the lead of things. So step two, Cat Yard.
