Picnic? Family dinner? What are you doing to start your summer?

We're doing a family dinner/picnic thing here. Pulled pork on the grill with espresso BBQ sauce. Louisville wings on the grill. Potato salad, crock pot beans, and some pickled eggs. I'm making a two-layer poke cake (with strawberry and blue berry jello and a whipped cream frosting). Tangerine tea (I just found a recipe for tangerine tea that I want to try). And homemade strawberry ice cream.

The local weather weenies are calling for a high temp around 88 degrees with thunderstorms throughout the day on Monday.

We still haven't had time to open the pool, so we need to do that today hopefully. And I need to mow lawn.

What are you doing for Memorial Day?

Mmmm, your threads always make me hungry! I'm sure you'll have a lovely picnic.
Happy Memorial Day! I hope everyone has a nice long weekend.

We really don't celebrate with a picnic, etc. To us, it's a day to remember those who died for this country. We usually go to a local parade. We sometimes go to a cemetary, and put small flags on veterans' graves. I also put flags outside of our house. We're the only ones on our street that ever do this, which is a shame.

That being said...hubby is a veteran; he served almost 10 years in 2 branches of the military (Army, then, Marine Corps).  I once asked him how he thinks people should celebrate the day: "Doing whatever gives them enjoyment; I want them to enjoy the freedoms we fought for."

Not so sound preachy, but because of what the holiday is supposed to represent, I don't wish people a "HAPPY" Memorial Day.  Not that I wish them ill, and I certainly hope that day, along with the other 364 days of the year, is a good one for them, but it does seem weird to me to say it's a"happy" day, given the origin of it.

It's going to be hot and humid so I plan on staying home in the A/C.

If I was up to it, I would be decorating graves then heading to a park where nephew and his family are camping for the weekend.

We are driving in the car right now to go to Door County to visit my parents. We are leaving the nineties behind in Chicago. Hopefully nice weather up north. The dogs will go swimming in the lake. Have a safe and wonderful Memorial Day everyone!

Hi Winchester!  Lots of food happening this weekend.  Today kicked it off with a potluck at a friends.  Tomorrow after an early morning ride on my horse I'll be getting ready for a big party at my place.  Memorial Day will be spent quietly with all my animals and hopefully a good book.  And I want to remember why we celebrate Memorial Day and the folks that have, are and have sacrificed their lives so that we may live a better life.

First of all...I'm making reservations for Winchester's house next Memorial day! Only because it's too late for this year. That sounds seriously yummy!

It's supposed to rain here so no BQing..we're not covered. After the tons of mail I delivered today, I'm going to sleep in tomorrow as long as my body will let me. The rest of the weekend will be Netflix and laying around. It will be nice to have 2 days to hang out with DH, we don't get to do that too often.

Dinner was so good! I kept praying for no rain (the pork is grilled very slowly for about five hours and I didn't want to have to do it inside if I didn't have to). We had some issues with the ice cream maker and our strawberry ice cream never became ice cream; I think it was simply so warm and humid that it wouldn't set up right.

The tangerine tea became orange tea (no tangerines at this time of the year). But that was a big hit with everybody....I was surprised that it went so quickly.

And we opened the pool!

You are more than welcome to come here any time you want!

We had a very quiet day since we got the major chores out of the way over the weekend. DH wanted burgers for lunch, fancy burgers, not mine :lol3: so we went out for lunch then I grilled brats for dinner. We watched a couple of movies and just relaxed, something we don't do nearly enough of.

Had a wonderful time in Door County. Except for the storms that barreled down on us Saturday night into Sunday morning. Power outages and trees down. By noon the power was back on and the sun was shining, We were able to go to the May Fest in Jacksonport. I bought a crazy cat lady fleece jacket. It was SOOOO cold up there Sunday. About 55 degrees. Spent Monday driving home. Tons of traffic and too many construction zones  Good to be home with the kitties :rub: :heart3:

it was a rather busy weekend around here. Saturday we had Gary's family reunion in KY so that was a lot of fun! Sunday we mostly cleaned up the house and did some serious yard work and his parents stopped by. Yesterday we had a bunch of friends over and did a big bbq of buffalo burgers and pulled pork sandwiches. Overall it was a very nice weekend
