Hi, I just joined this forum today, I've already asked a question in the behaviour forum, but I have another question regarding my daughters cat.

She's not living with us, she's an adult, so I didn't see her cat as frequently as when she lived here.  At the beginning of this week I went over to her place and Kali was out in the kitchen, where she was quite visible.  I noticed that her fur, or a lot of it, was missing off the backs of her back legs, and around her tail.  She also seemed extra 'lazy'.  She's only four years old.  I insisted we take her to the vets.

When the vet looked at her, she noticed her gums were white.  Bloodwork showed her HCT at 11.7% and her HGB at 3.7% g/dL.  Everything  else looks to be within normal realms on her bloodwork.  She said that if Kali had lost that much blood over a short period of time that she would be dead, that it must have been over an extended period of time and that her body had compensated for it, to an extent.

The vet thinks that she likely had a parasite in her blood, possibly from fleas while she was a kitten, and that stress caused it to flair into activity.  Two years ago, my daughter moved from home to an apartment, got a great dane/akbash cross puppy, then moved a friend of hers in with another cat and another untrained large breed dog.  This was likely the stressor.  The other cat and one dog have since moved out.

They gave us prednisone to suppress her immune response as her white blood cells are destroying her red blood cells before they can mature.  She is also on an oral antibiotic, doxycycline.  we've been told to keep her very calm and quiet as her heart is very stressed.  She said that she's seen cats seemingly begin to recover only to have their tiny hearts fail.

We're doing all we can to make her better, but she's not eating or drinking much.  They gave me recovery and critical care moist food samples to try, and suggested beef broth baby food puree as well, since it's high in iron.  She will lick a little off the end of your finger, and then lose interest.  Any advice on getting the Kalicat back to health would be greatly appreciated.

Is she happy in her new home?  If not, can she return to your home until she gets stronger?

I don't have much experience nursing sick kitties back to health.  I hope someone can offer some advice.

I'll be sending healingh thoughs to Kalicat!

She wouldn't be happy moving while she's sick.  She's been at the apartment she's in now for about two years.  The vet thinks the anemia started quite some time back, but was slow, until the last couple of weeks.  She has certain spots she's comfortable lying in, so best she stay there.  Besides, I have a busy small  household, myself.  528 square feet, one dog, three cats, a gecko, two aquariums of fish.... who am I forgetting?  Oh yeah, and a man!  ;)  Thanks for the feedback.  :)

We've lessened the dose of steroids, per vet directions, but I'm worried that it was too soon.  We're not seeing any change in the colour of her gums and she's really not eating much at all.  She IS talking more, again.  :)  They said to watch her for changes for the worse after lowering her dose but as we haven't seen much improvement I'm not sure what they mean.  I really hope we didn't catch this too late for the poor girl.  :(  It would be absolutely devastating to Rebecca, let alone me, to lose her.  A cat with a lot of cattitude is Kalicat.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
I have a lot of experience with this. Our Tuxedo had an autoimmune disease that caused this. We fought for four years (his was a little more complicated at first, there was also a problem with his white blood cells). Now he's fine and doing great, so don't give up on your Kalicat!!!

If it is a parasite, the Doxy should resolve the problem. That said:

When were you at the vet with her? I mean - when were the medications started? (How long has she been taking them?)

How much does she weigh, and how much pred was prescribed? (What was the dose of pred? 5mg? 10mg?)

Did the vet give you any idea how quickly the Doxy should work?

BTW, Kalicat really needs to eat. You (your daughter) can assist-feed her with a syringe. I remember when Tuxie was that bad. He would walk over to the bowl, and stand in front of it, like he forgot what he was doing there. I kind of regret the vet never mentioned to us syringe-feeding. At the time, our vet just said - find ANYTHING he will eat. For Tuxie, that was boiled jumbo shrimp served warm LOL. But heating up the food may help her eat on her own - it increases the smell. Strong smells seem to help. Have you tried tuna juice on top of the food?

If she has feline hemolytic anemia, and not anemia caused by a parasite in her blood, she may need a different steroid to control the problem.

Many vibes for you, your daughter, and especially Kalicat!!! :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

Hi, thanks for the response.  We were at the vet on Wednesday the 22nd.  She weighed about ten pounds.  Less than sue used to be.

She was started on 5 mg tablets of prednisone and  20 ml of doxycycline, both twice a day.  After three days we were told to drop the prednisone to half a tablet twice daily.  She's licked some food from our fingers, veterinary critical care moist food, warmed in the microwave.

Every now and then she has a bit of kibble, not great stuff, but food, and she likes it.  We tried tuna and were very surprised she was completely uninterested, she loves tuna.  Tried liver treats and baby beef/broth.  I was just over there giving her her medicine and *fingers crossed* her gums had a tinge of pink to them.  :)

I think she may be turning the corner.  :)  I think they said to give it about a week.

Oh I hope you're right about her turning the corner!!!! Many vibes! :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

Yeah, the food can be an issue. Basically, anything she'll eat is good right now. She probably needs lots of small nibblies rather than meals.

I REALLY hope this means it was a blood parasite, and the doxy's working. If it is feline hemolytic anemia (FHA), I seriously doubt you'd be seeing any improvement on that dose of pred. Tuxie was initially given 10mg, and he weighed just 7 pounds at his worst (down from 12: he was skin and bones). And in the end, he needed depomedrol injections - that seems to have a different enough mechanism of action from the pred. Thankfully, that worked for our boy.

But seems like the Doxy is helping. :D

If there is ANY doubt in your mind about her improvement after that week is up, please take her back for another hematocrit. They don't have to run a full blood panel - they can run just the HCT.

Well, we took her back Friday morning.  They have now discovered a heart murmur.  A gallop.  So, not good.  She is being tapered off the prednisone and continuing on the antibiotic for another two weeks.  Her lips are a tad pinker, her appetite is up... I really can't tell, but I hope she hangs on until her red blood cells have a chance to increase.  Here's wishing the KaliCat good health.  :)
