I came home from work to find our beautiful cat Lily (who was only added to our family within the past few weeks) behind my son's dresser with 2 beautiful orange kittens. Within an hour after we had 3 more. Its so funny because there are 2 black tortie like that are identical and there are 3 orange tabbys that are identical. I really thought we would get at least one white one since mama is pure white but no matter, I'm so proud of how well she did. The last kitten was stillborn (he was limp and wasnt breathing and mama wasnt paying to much care to it) but my husband and I were prepared and syringed his lungs along with stimulating him to breathe for a good minute or so. She/he was the biggest one out of all so maybe he was stuck in the birth canal...?

I'm pretty sure she is done now since its been about 30 mins and she seems all settled in with them but I am definitely no expert so I'm just gonna keep an eye on her. Yay! I'm so proud of her!

And to all those that are wondering (as I would be too) Yes she is scheduled to be spayed

Yolly well done, all of your!  Congrats!

About the kitten.  Cat do have more kitttens, but also the losses are heavier, than say, humans. Sad, but so is it.  You did a very good try, with any luck you could succeed as   these stillborn are not always dead.  Another trick to try could be to warm her & massaging.

Warming up the quickest way is by dropping in warm water.   (perhaps easier said than done, to get the water in exact right warmth when in a hurry?).  Works often on piglets, so also on kittens.

They CAN deliver hours apart, even days.  So IF you think there may be one left - it MAY be one left.

But the solutions is exactly as you already do - if she seems settled and happy, keep an eye on things, but take it easy.   It is when she seems in distress and no common birth labor, as you must be double watchful and should contact a vet.

Good luck!    *vibes*

Ok I need help! She is now putting a certain kitten (and not the one that was stillborn) out about 3 feet from the rest of them on the floor, out of the box. She has been doing for about an hour now every 15 mins or so. Everytime I hear the baby crying I put it back on the nipple and she recieves it again but then it happens again in 5-10 mins after. Is she rejecting it? What do I do?

Cats will reject any kitten they feel is 'wrong'. It may be sick, in which case it will probably smell wrong, or have a fever, or just be smaller than the others. Does this kitten seem any different to you? Keep trying to get her to feed it and weigh it at least once a day to see if it is putting on weight - use a kitchen scale that measures in grams so you can tell easily. If it is not gaining and she keeps rejecting it you may have to take on bottle feeding. I would get prepared for that with a bottle and some KMR (available at a pharmacy or vet). It is handy to have on hand anyway with a new family. Good luck with it, I hope you succeed, but sometimes mama cats just know when a kitten is not meant to live.

Jennyranson is right- in my momma cats case she had a kitten with a very obvious physical deformity, right at birth she picked it up, put it to the side- turned her back to it and began nursing the 'healthy' ones while she continued to deliver the rest. In my case, the deformity was severe and there was no way the kitten would have survived [it died within 50 minutes of being born]. Sometimes the mom will reject them if they're the runt as well, especially being a first time mom [obviously we don't know if that's the case, but it's a possibility]. I'd probably continue watching and trying to keep the baby with her, continue to get it to latch on so it gets those very important nutrients and such that first day or two after birth. It helps them so much, and helps with their immune system greatly. If she keeps rejecting it, like mentioned above- i'd get a bottle and Kitten Milk Replacement so you can try to supplement if she still refuses to feed.

Thanks for the advice. I definitely must say it was a sleepless night as I was worried to death that the little baby would have passed away during the night or something. But it made it through the night and mama hasnt done it since. She is loving all over the kitten now and cleaning it and all....so hopefully it was just a fluke? To answer a previous question: yes, I believe this particular kitten would be classified as "the runt" as its quite a bit smaller then the rest. I've also noticed its always being bullied and pushed away from mama by all the other kittens when its trying to latch. This morning I bought some GNC milk replacer (thats all the pet store near me had) but when I'm in town I am going to pick up some KMR and I am going to begin supplementing just in case. I also need to buy a scale as this was an unexpected surprise litter we thought we had more time to buy these things.

What are your thoughts on GNC milk replacer? I also have canned goats milk....would that be better to use? And how much do I feed at a time? Thanks for all the advice.

Weigh your kittens every day at about the same time.  They should be putting 10g or more on a day.  Whatever it looks like, if the kitten is gaining weight leave well along.  Bottle feeding is nothing like as good nutritionally as mother's milk, it's awful easy to mis-feed a kitten so milk goes into the lungs (they don't have a cough reflex when tiny) and they can get lazy feeders as a bottle is easier to feed from than a nipple.

I got a set of digital kitchen scales that read to 1g quite cheaply, I'm sure the equivalent are easy to find in the US.  I find grams easier than ounces as there are no decimal points to worry about - there are just over 28g to 1 oz so you would need scales reading to 0.01 of an oz.

I also took photos of the last set I fostered once a week, each one as I weighed it, and it was amazing seeing how they grew over that time.  At 3 weeks they only just fitted the scales so I called it a day.
