Just wondering if anyone has ever experienced this before, and if anyone could suggest something that I should specifically ask for a test for.

Moe's been sick twice over the course of 3 weeks. The first time he was vomiting all day long, was acting very lethargic, and was dehydrated (which we assume was due to the constant vomiting). He was so weak that there was a point where we didn't think he was going to live through the night. The vet mentioned pancreatitis, but that first time he was just treated for the nausea, given fluids and sent home with Hill's I/D food for his stomach. He perked up and started acting normal again after about 3 days.

Then last Thursday he got sick again. No vomiting this time, but he was so lethargic, dehydrated and weak, that once again, we didn't think he was going to live through the night. I took him to the vet twice in one day and this time the vet tested for pancreatitis immediately. The test had to be sent out to a lab, so in the meantime he got another anti-nausea shot, more I/D food and more fluids. I took him back that same night we he seemed to get even weaker and that time they ran a full blood panel, gave him an antibiotic shot and an appetite stimulant.

None of that seemed to work, though he did seem more active the day after this happened. For the past 3 1/2 days though, we've been force feeding him food and water because he has been refusing to eat or drink. He was still acting really lethargic, just not as bad as the day when I took him to the vet. I thought for sure that I was going to have to take him back to the vet today because I wasn't sure if the force feeding was even enough food for him. But this morning he woke up and he seems completely normal. He's eating and drinking and bouncing off the walls like he usually does.

The vet just called me with his test results for pancreatitis. He did a test for any gasterointestional problem, but he said that everything came back within normal range. So he said that at this point we can rule out some potential problems, but he can't figure out a diagnosis yet. All he knows is that being that sick twice in three weeks isn't normal, so there has to be SOMETHING wrong, somewhere.

So here's what I do know:

~The gasterointestional test came back normal. From what I understand, that means that he doesn't have pancreatitis or IBD, or at least he's not showing signs of it in his bloodwork.

~When the full blood panel was done, his liver and kidneys were fine. His white blood cells were fine. Everything was in normal range except for one thing (and I can't remember what it was) that the vet said was only slightly elevated, and is usually indicative of infection, but since the white blood cells were fine, it may have just been a freak thing that this other thing was elevated. He didn't seem at all concerned about it.

~He had x-rays done to rule out an obstruction.

~He's just under 3 years old, so he's not an old cat with problems. I did hand raise him and bottle feed him though. I fostered him and his litter mates for our old vet starting from when they were about 2 weeks old. I'm wondering if he's just sickly because he didn't get his mother's milk long enough. I asked the vet about this though and he said that if he was with his mother for the first few days, then he got the initial nutrients that he needed. I just figured I'd include it into the list of things that I do know, just in case its at all related.

~He does have asthma and gets an inhaler twice a day, every day.

~He also takes a low dose of prozac every day to keep him from spraying.

Other than that, thats all I really know about him.

Has anyone ever dealt with this symptoms before? Basically its lethargy, nausea, vomiting, and refusal to eat or drink. Or have any idea what he should be tested for? I made an appointment today to bring him back in next week, or sooner if he starts acting sick again, for a recheck and potentially more tests, so I want to be prepared to ask the vet to look for certain things if he doesn't suggest it on his own. Any ideas or opinions would be welcomed!

How long has he taken Prozac and at what dose?

What exactly does he eat i.e. brand and type?

What is the name of the inhaler drug he is on, how long has he been on this, and at what dose two times a day?

Can you find out what that one thing that was elevated on his labs was? Were any other lab results at the high or low end of normal? Will need reference ranges of these.

Do you have any house plants, or if he goes outside ever, that he may have access to that are regarded as poisonous?

Have you been using a cleaning product around him?

Do you burn candles or have room fresheners in the home?

Just kind of "brain storming" off the top of my head. It sounds like something he is ingesting or inhaling, so I'm hoping the answers to these questions can help to narrow things down a bit--or bring up more questions.

Let's see how well I can answer all of these:

How long has he taken Prozac and at what dose?

He's been on it for about 8 months now, and its the lowest dose. Its 1/4 of a 10mg pill, so its only 2.5mg a day. He's been doing really well on it, and I know that bodies can change (humans or animals) and start rejecting things they never rejected before, but as far as I know, the prozac has never given him any bad side effects.

What exactly does he eat i.e. brand and type?

He eats Royal Canin Urinary SO - the dry version. He's not the one with urinary problems though. I had one cat with a severe blockage, and another with crystals, so all of my cats have been eating the same food for over 2 years now (which several vets have told me is perfectly fine to do with this particular food). However, when he got sick 3 weeks ago and then this second time the vet put him on Hill's I/D canned food for a few days, and then he went back to the SO food.

What is the name of the inhaler drug he is on, how long has he been on this, and at what dose two times a day?

Its Flovent 250mcg. I honestly have no idea what the dosage is per dose, but thats what the inhaler itself says, and its given morning and night. I do know that its a somewhat high dose of the medicine, but we've tried him on lower doses and he responds best to the higher dose. He's had no asthma attacks that I have seen on the 250mcg, but I've seen him have several on a lower dose. He's been on this for about 2 years now.

Can you find out what that one thing that was elevated on his labs was? Were any other lab results at the high or low end of normal? Will need reference ranges of these. Need to call the vet for this one because I don't have a copy of the bloodwork. So when I find out I'll come back and post it. It was something that I had never heard of before, and I go to the best vet in the area, and he seemed unconcerned about it, which is why I initially wasn't concerned, but i'll find out what it was and if it can be connected to all of this at all.

Do you have any house plants, or if he goes outside ever, that he may have access to that are regarded as poisonous?

We have several house plants but none of them are toxic. We have 11 cats in the house so anything new that is brought in is researched thoroughly before we deem it safe for the cats. I've never seen him eat any of the plants though. I have one other cat that chews on anything in her path, but Moe pays no attention to the plants in the house. However, he does run outside whenever the door opens, but he always stays in our backyard (we have a pretty high fence). I've seen him eat grass before, but we have no toxic plants back there and no chemicals on the lawn. The first time he got sick, he threw up grass at first, so initially I wasn't concerned about the vomiting because I've seen that happen before with him and a few of the other cats. But it quickly turned from a few pieces of grass into just liquid, and then foam. I thought it might have been a hairball, but after the grass there was nothing in it at all.

Have you been using a cleaning product around him?

Nothing that I haven't used in the past. I use windex, an anti-bacterial spray cleaner, and a stove top cleaner pretty frequently, but he's not usually around me when I clean and its all stuff that gets wiped off of whatever I am cleaning. I know it can leave residue or be in the air, but I haven't changed any cleaners that I use and I've had him around me for almost 3 years now.

Do you burn candles or have room fresheners in the home?

We burn candles occasionally, but we stopped using air fresheners after he was diagnosed with asthma. We weren't sure if they were triggering his asthma so we just opted to use candles occasionally. I know I've burned one or two candles within the past 3 weeks.

I don't know if that helps at all as you try to come up with an answer!
