Hi guys! I'm a newbie on here but I was wondering if anybody else has experience with agression in late pregnancy? My girl is at least 58 days pregnant (could be longer but that is going off of the last time that I had to use the water bottle on my boy. :lol3:) She has been extremely affectionate this whole time however since yesterday she has been attacking my youngest kid. My daughter doesn't even touch her and she lunges and scratches. Is this normal? She has her own room with her nesting box and everything needed for labor and afterwards but I was keeping the door open so that she can come and go. I would really hate to have to keep her isolated for the next couple of weeks. Could it be a sign of labor or just hormones?

I took in a pregnant stray, and she was friendly as can be. As soon as she knew I had food, she rubbed against me and let me pet her and went in the carrier no problem. I took her to the vet and I picked her up and she didnt object at all. When I got home, I was petting her and she hissed and swiped at me with absolutely no warning. I asked around and came to the conclusion that it was hormones.  As she got closer to her delivery she became even more affectionate and her hissing/biting/swatting pretty much stopped, and while she dleivered and now while she is nursing she wants me to pet her all the time. I think it is just stress/hormones that cause pregnant mom's to act out like that. I would however, keep your children away from her. I got bit bad enough that I had to go to the doc, and tetanus shots are no fun!

I don't have any children, but when my female was late in pregnancy she started acting VERY aggressive towards our dog, would run across the house just to launch herself on his face while he never did anything back but cower and yelp. It was very bad the last week, she was attacking him at least once a day and would attack me or my boyfriend if we got in the middle. She would also randomly attack my leg as I was making her food, or randomly swipe and bite my arm while petting her even though she was obviously enjoying it. After she had the babies she's been much MUCH better. I think she'll improve even more after the kittens are gone to their new homes. So yes, just the hormones!

Thanks so much for the quick response. I've read that the get extremely affectionate but there isn't much about aggression. I'm happy to hear that she will get back to normal. She hates not being around me but it sounds like she is going to have to stay in her room for a while. How old are your kittens, Clynn? My kitty looks a lot like your cat from your profile picture :)

@Who it is...she isn't protective over the kittens when she is nursing? I had assumed that nursing would very the only time that I would really have to worry about aggression. It looks like I had it all backwards. Hehe.

It looks like my last post didn't go through. @Who it is: Your cat wasn't aggressive when she was nursing? I thought that nursing would be when I would have to worry about aggression. It looks like I've had it all backwards. Hehe.

Nope, not at all while nursing. She will worry and want to keep an eye on me if I pick one up, but she trusts me and lets me pretty much do anything. Havent seen any aggression since before she delivered. I am sure every cat is different, and in my situation she was a stray as well so the stress of me bringing her inside could have had something to do with it all too. I have heard from others that the moms are very protective and will be protective until the kittens get older, but like I said every cat is different. I started a thread on the topic as well, here it is if you want to see the responses I received.

The cat in my profile picture is the momma of the babies- she turned 1 on 4/20, was born to a feral in my neighborhood- we got her inside when she was 8 weeks old but she suffered some socialization problems from being feral for that long. Broke out of the carrier on the way to the vet to be spayed, returned weeks later with a big ole belly
She had 6 babies, one died from a deformity within 50 minutes after birth- the other 5 are healthy and happy and so much fun. They just turned 4 weeks on Wednesday!
They were born 4/18, I thought she was gonna have them on her birthday!!
