My poor sweet MIL is here for two weeks to help me out with my 2 year old and newborn and one of her doggies has crossed the bridge.  (I am keeping this OFF facebook for now.)

Jake, a boxer-shepard mix, was the sweetest, most gentle giant ever.  My DH isn't really a dog person; but even he wants a Jake-clone.  He put up with a lot from my nieces and nephews over the years.  And his buddy Molly, who can't control her tongue.  He put her in place when she needed it.

Jake has had some health issues as he has aged.  MIL and FIL came up on Sunday and FIL returned home yesterday so they had Jake and Molly at a boarders where they've been before.  FIL picked Jake up this morning.  I guess last night the lady who runs the boarding place (it's only down the street from their house, on a farm) said he had been fine but wasn't looking so good.  Being boarded has always stressed him out; but he does better there than other places.  I guess shortly after FIL went to get him today he passed while FIL had MIL over the phone with him.  MIL said he had been panting and he stopped and listend to her talk to him for a minute; then he went.

Our entire family will miss Jake terribly.  It sounds to me like he was ready to go; but he waited to say goodbye to his Mama.

Goodbye Jake!  We love you so much!!

Boxers are usually incredible with children. It must be so rough on your m-i-l to lose him while she's not home. It really sounds as if he were waiting to say goodbye. RIP, Jake, you're going to be missed so much.

I do think he was waiting to say goodbye to her.  Jake was incredible with all the kids.  Somewhere I have a picture of my nephew "dancing" with him.
And as huge as he was; he loved to get in your lap...if you let him!

I was looking at only the thumbnail size pictures when I posted earlier.  This picture is better.  Jake got more of a "teddy bear" look the last few years after he came off steroids for a tumor he had.  He used to be more of the lean, traditional boxer body.

My great-uncle's neighbor had a Boxer, Duke, who used to come over to play with us kids as soon as he saw we were visiting. Ours, Fritz, adored kids and was incredibly patient with them, even when one tried to put a plug in his nostrils and two others tried to "listen" to his heart by sticking a toy stethoscope into his throat. Both our nephew and the little girl next door learned to walk with Fritz's help. They would hang on to him while he walked very slowly, and if they fell he'd stand still so that they could use him to pull themselves up again. My sister (4 kids) has had two Boxers, and swears they're born nannies.

So sorry for the loss. He sounds like he was a well-loved member of your family and will be greatly missed.
