So, I took Piper in for her annual clipping at Petco today.  I am checking her in, she is in her pet taxi, on the counter next to me.  And these kids, about 6 of them, run up making all kinds of noise and trying to pet her.  This freaks Piper out.  #1:  She's shy and doesn't like strangers too well, especially children!  #2:  When she is confined in her carrier, she feels clausterphobic and it makes her freak outs worse.  #3:  I don't like it when people have no respect and do not ask me first before petting or grabbing any of my babies!!!!!!

I quickly grab her away and tell the children "Please don't mess with her.  She doesn't know you.  I don't want you to get hurt."  To which their mom replied in a snide and rude tone "Don't tell my children 'don't'!  YOU shouldn't have a cat in here if she is dangerous to children!  How irresponsible is that?"  I looked her in the eyes and got snotty and rude myself and replied "M'am, you need to teach your children respect and common curtesy.  It is not safe for them to run up on and grab any strange animal, especially in a place like Petco.  You need keep your kids in check in places like this.  If they get harmed, it would be your fault!"

The Petco manager, who had witnessed the whole thing came up to her and asked her to remove herself from the store with her children.  I guess they'd been there for quite a while and they had been asked to leave the cats up for adoption alone and other people complained about her kids running up to and grabbing their pets!!!   Geez, the nerve of some people!

Wow....

If they'd done that to Freya, even in a carrier, someone would have bled.

That's not just rude, it's outright dangerous around animals.

Wow girl, you handled it much better than I would. 6 kids? I would have come up with some snide remark regarding birth control, and why I'm sticking to cats instead of kids, etc.

I really don't mean to be rude by saying this, so I hope you don't find it offensive in any way. :)

Six kids really is not a lot at all... I plan on having at least that many when I do have them.  Many people would of course think you are crazy for owning 11 cats + fostering.  I would think that you would understand??

My remark would have been such because of how the children were ACTING actually, not the amount itself. I don't care how many kids people have as long as they behave.

And I stopped caring about what other people think of me a LONG time ago.

"You Go Girl!"  I'm glad you said that to the mom! It's so true. So many children do not have any "home training."  Call it lazy parenting, whatever,

there's no excuse!  I remember "back in the day," when we went somewhere, you got "the talk" on the way over, or before going in somewhere.

Even going to visit friends, my mom would always tell us to help pick up any mess we made while playing, before we left!

You would think going into a place where there would be animals they did not know, they would have been told how to behave!

Good for you  - and good for the manager.  Petco is not place where animals aren't welcome.   Actually they're probably more welcome than kids --- and better behaved.

I can understand you wanting them, and having them.  I can't understand you not controlling them in public.  Teach them to mind, or get leashes and muzzles.

My point was not so much that there were 6 kids but the irresponsibility of the mother letting them run wild like that!!  I would have had my butt beat right in Petco if I had done that as a kid.  But even when I was growing up, I indeed got the talk about what would happen if I stepped out of line and didn't behave before going anywhere and acting like that.  It wasnt' that long ago!!!!  Now it seems parents want to blame everyone else for their kids acting like jerks.  Kid gets a bad grade or in trouble at school?  Obviously the school is at fault!!!  Kid gets them thrown out of a restaurant or pet store, well, we'll suit them for not being more "child friendly."   It seems these jerks with their brats are everywhere!!  They demand you respect their rights to have their brats there but they don't want to respect your right (and blame you) to tell them to leave when their kids act up and put themselves in a possibly dangerous situation!  I don't dislike kids.  I dislike disrespectful brats and their lazy and even more disrespectful parents!

Well, hitting your kid in PetCo (or anywhere public) is extremely rude and disrespectful, so I guess your parents were, too! :lol3: Yeah, I hate lazy and disrespectful parents.

Yeah, I hate lazy and disrespectful parents.
True, but it wasn't illegal even 25 yrs ago like it is today.  Today, you can be thrown in jail and have your kids taken away for "disciplining" them in public.  You have to watch even how you talk to them in public.  Where were all these laws and stigmas when I was growing up?
Still, if I hadn't ever had any discipline, just as most kids today, I would've turned out to be a complete loser and jerk in society.  Just a theory, but this new trend in parenting isn't shaping up for stronger and more successful generations after!

I don't think hitting is discipline, but then I feel I was severely emotionally damaged by "normal" non-abusive spanking, so I'm biased :). And when I go to PetCo, I really don't want to have a panic attack that will ruin my whole day. And I WISH it were illegal, because far too many lazy, disrespectful, rude parents do it around here. It's not safe for me to go shopping.

I prefer children who are raised by parents who model compassionate behavior.

Well, back to the topic, I would have been very happy when the manager kicked that family out. Piper was in a carrier. That alone should make it obvious that one should ask before approaching her.

It was pretty sweet, even if it's wrong to say or think so... I couldn't help but smile to myself!!!  The majority of the animals she let the kids mess with and terrorize were in carriers or cages.  I'm surprised no one got bit or whatever... When an animal is confined and cornered is the worst time to terrorize them!!  I guess she felt the opposite.  Some people!

Yeah, I think store managers should be more willing to ask people to leave when they're being disruptive. It seems too rare. I know they're worried about losing the business, but shouldn't they be more concerned about keeping the business of their well-behaved customers?
