My cat was two years old and just passed away yesterday. I heard a couple of loud bangs and noises and when I got up and looked she was making weird gurgling noises and shook her paw a few times and went lifeless. I have no idea what happened. I went to sleep and she was sleeping in the corner on the floor and nothing fell so I have no idea what happened that she did whatever she did and ended up facing the opposite way than she was laying on her side her eyes were wide open. My bf had the car so I called everyone I knew and everybody was working and my mom was in line to get Dells tickets and refused to leave to come and take my cat and I to the vet. When I did finally get a friend to leave work to come and help me out my cat didn't have a heart beat anymore and I had one vet that was completely heartless and told my bfs brother that we could bring her in after 3:30 and it ws 2:40 and this happened about 1:45 because all the doctors were on break. I was like no I can't wait any longer I've waited too long already trying to find a ride and called my other vet that I take my lizzards too and they told us to bring her in and they'll call a doctor in because no one was there that help with what was wrong with her and they were very compassionate about it all. Where the other place sounded heartless. Just wish I knew what happened to my baby yesterday. I still have one left and getting another kitten soon to give the other one a companion. I'll always miss her though and she'll always have a special place in my heart. She was gray and white with white paws and just an awesome cat. She'll definitely be missed and I'm glad I'm moving because there's too many memories in this apartment of her and I can't live here anymore! Below is a picture of her! I'll miss you Lucky baby!!

I'm so sorry you lost your dear Lucky!
I lost my boy, Sven, in late March, although he was much older and had been sick for a few years, so it was not a shock like with your girl.  I'm glad you have another furbaby to help you thru this difficult time...somehow that makes it a little easier...at least it did for me.

Thanks it does help having one left because I have cat toys and food and water and it'd be worse if I didn't have a cat to use any of that. Just can't wait till I can get another kitten cause maybe a little kitten around will help some and my other cat won't be alone anymore. I don't think it matters how old a cat is either way it's still hard to lose them, but I think it might be a little worse when you have no idea it's going to happen and they're fine one minute and then next gone. In a way I wish I saw what happened to her yesterday because it might give me peace to know exactly what happened and if there was anything I could've done to help her, but I think at the end of the day the outcome would've been the same. At least she's in a better place and I'll see her again when I die! Which doesn't help much because I just want her here with me and hold her one last time she was too young to just up and die like that without any warning! I'd give anything to have her back!

Kittens are so healing to us, but your existing cat might not like having a kitten round.  Cats are not really social animals, and kittens can be very demanding.  My own view is that two kittens are easier to fit in than one - they play with each other, manically, and leave the older cat alone.  Of course it will join in if it wants to!

I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty! A friend of mine lost her beautiful cat the same way. As Violet said above, it is most likely hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)

HCM is the most common of feline myocardial diseases and also the form with the most varied phenotype. Most cases of human HCM appear to be associated with mutations in sarcomeric proteins; it is not yet known if the same is true in cats. In the absence of molecular markers for HCM in cats, the condition is defined as left ventricular hypertrophy without obvious cause (ie. not due to systemic hypertension, aortic stenosis or hyperthyroidism). Functionally, HCM is characterized by impaired ventricular relaxation and increased ventricular stiffness (diastolic dysfunction), which may impose problems with ventricular filling, leading to increased atrial pressures and congestive failure. A frequent associated finding is dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO), generally caused by abnormal motion of the anterior mitral leaflet during systole, where the leaflet moves towards the outflow tract during ejection instead of co-apting normally. This dynamic obstruction may be intermittent or persistent. Other complications, such as myocardial infarction, may cause regional systolic dysfunction that may cause difficulties in recognizing the original phenotype as HCM.

Pathological findings

Hypertrophy of the left ventricle (LV) may affect both septum and free wall equally, or the septum or free wall preferentially. The papillary muscles may be markedly hypertrophied. The left (and right) atrium may be dilated when filling pressures are increased. The mitral valve leaflets may be thickened or abnormally long, with abnormal arrangement of the papillary muscles. Myocardial infarction may occur, appearing as localized wall thinning with scarring. Histologically, myofiber disarray may be noted within areas of LV hypertrophy, and myocardial fibrosis is common, especially in areas with abnormal small intramural coronary arteries.3  Myocarditis has also been noted in cats with HCM.4

Clinical presentation

Although the highest incidence of HCM may be in young adult male cats, the signalment can be very varied.5  It may be seen in kittens less than six months, as well as in cats over 10 years. Some breeds may be predisposed or have a familial form of HCM, such as Maine Coons, Persians, Ragdolls and Cornish rexes. Some cats with HCM are completely asymptomatic, and may not even demonstrate any abnormalities on physical examination, although other cats have murmurs or gallop sounds, and occasionally arrhythmias. Congestive heart failure when it occurs may be severe and acute, with life-threatening pulmonary edema. Pleural effusion may also occur. Cats with HCM are predisposed to thromboembolic disease.

The apartment I'll be moving to only allows two cats and the cat I have now is two years old as was the other one I got them together as kittens is very playful and still acts like a kitten herself. Plus I'll introduce her slowly to the new kitten and I know it'll work out just fine. My cousin did the same when she got a kitten and had a dog and also introduced the kitten to her brother's cat and they get along now as well. I just want her to have someone to play with because her and Lucky played once in a while and would chase each other around the house and when they wanted loving they'd come to me and want to be petted. I know she misses her sister you can see it on her face that she doesn't understand where she is and why she's gone and just looks so sad.

BarbB my mom said the same thing that she might have had a heart attack and made a big commotion because she was in pain and that's why her eyes looked terrified. Just wish I didn't see that though because now that image will always be in my head and I don't want to remember her that way. I don't think it would've mattered that day when I got her to the vet I have a feeling at the end of the day she wouldn't have made it, but I still wish I had the car and could at least have tried to get her there on time to do cpr on her to see if they could revive her. I'm just trying to think of whatever I can to try to lesson my pain a little which so far nothings worked so if anyone has any advice for me on how I can ease the pain of losing her that would help a lot right now. I asked my bf's family and my aunt if cats go to heaven which I believe they do, but I wanted to get other opinions on it too and they all said yes and they all believe I'll see her there.

Having just l lost my guy, the only thing that I know of that lessens the pain is time
.  Knowing exactly what happened would probably not make you feel any less sad...it would, however, answer the why.  But it still won't bring her back, sadly.  And,yes, I definitely believe ALL my furbabies are waiting for me in heaven.  Let's just hope I don't end up somewhere else

Yea I believe that every animals goes to heaven we teach them a little, but they teach us so much more. They teach us about unconditional love and forgiveness and everything God is and they don't sin like us. I hope too that I don't end up some place else as well because I wanna see my baby and the others that I'll have in my life when I die so I can have eternal life with them forever. So I'm going to do everthing in my power to end up in heaven and not some place else. I'm already a good person and believe in God and that Jesus died for us so we can have eternal life and I believe each furbaby we have is a gift from God to keep us company till we can be with him and since our pets are love I don't see God putting them anywhere else, but up there with him! I also agree with you that if I saw what happened I might know what happened or I still won't have a clue and yes it won't bring my baby back, but at least she's in a good place a place I hope I'll be some day! Thanks for responding and I'm sorry you lost your furbaby too!

What a gorgeous baby Lucky was, and I am so very sorry for your untimely loss!  What a terrible shock it must be for you, and to have some people be so lacking in compassion and support!  I will stay on the subject only of your loss, though, hoping you can find comfort in knowing that Lucky is watching over you always! and that you will be reunited in due time, never to part.  May you take comfort also in your cherished memories of Lucky.  What a beautiful cat.

Thanks she was a very gorgeous cat and sweet too. She didn't meow she would squak at you or meow silently at you. She'd also bite, but then lick you right away so you couldn't tell her not to bite because when you're about to tell her she'd lick you right a way. I never expected for her to leave me so soon. I thought I'd have at least 10 yrs or more before I'd have to worry about this day. Hopefully I can get a kitten soon so my other baby Precious has a companion. I was going to get one from the humane society, but I want one that's a little younger which they don't have that aren't already adapted and I have to put my landlord on there and they need to be spayed and declawed and they might have to be full grown cats so when they call them up they'll say no and I'll be declined even thought i'll be out of this place in a few weeks. This is the only picture on my camera of the two of my cats together. This picture was suppose to be of Lucky which my friends thought it would be funny to put a beer bottle in her paw and make her look like an alcoholic and my cat Precious stopped and sat pretty in the picture too. They're the same age even though they didn't act like it Lucky was more lazy and like to sleep and eat and once in a while play with Precious while Precious has always been very active and playful, but hasn't been herself since Lucky's been gone.

Thanks and yea she was a very laid back cat. She liked to sleep and eat and once in a while attack her sister. She always came when you called her too and want to be petted at well. She liked laying on her back a lot and you'd just find her chillin laying in the middle of the floor on her back. Wish she could've been here 10 or more years, but I guess she was only meant to be here for a short time!
