My baby has been to the vet, with no avail. He continues to lick the fur off his stomach, to the point that its bald. It isn't red or irritated in anyway, and the vet is stumped. I've gone from his normal everyday food consisting only of Wellness Core chicken/turkey, to exclusively Natural Balance Duck with no positive results after 6 weeks. I'd like to try the canned Rabbit, Lamb, or Venison by Nature's Variety. Does anyone know why I should choose one flavor over the other? I did try the Nature's Variety chicken medallions, but he wasn't having it.  Thanks everyone

Any of those should be fine, they're all alternative proteins to regular ones (even duck is becoming a regular protein and is in a lot of foods. I have a dog with a severe duck allergy so I have to check everything I bring in to make sure it's not in it).

For what it's worth, all of my pets (cats and dogs) go nuts for the rabbit, like the venison alright and are just "meh" about the lamb.

My guy loves them all but he particularly likes the rabbit, and then second the lamb. Rabbit is in a lot of vet diets because it's supposed to be real easy on the allergies and well liked, though it can be hard to find sometimes. I use Instinct canned either cat or dog, whichever I can get, because the ingredients and formula are the same. Dog cans are bigger. I also use Wysong Au Jus in Rabbit mixed with other food since it's not a complete diet, and I get Hound and Gatos too. All all equally good. I get whatever is in stock.

Your cat is most likely allergic to some protein source, but in case he isn't I would stick with one of the Natural Balance varieties. They also come in Venison, Fish and one more I can't think of. The NV is high quality, but it also isn't a Limited Ingredient Diet and contains other ingredients he might possibly be allergic too.
My cat also was chewing down all the fur on his tummy from allergies, so I changed him to Venison NB which did nothing, and then to Salmon NB which eventually cleared up his allergies. Other fishy foods I am able to give included Before Grain Salmon and Soulistic Upstream Dream. But now that he's been furry for a while, I'm finally trying to see how he'll do with rabbit protein sources.

kittyissleeping, where are you located? If you're in the U.S., please see if there is a holistic vet you can get to. http://www.ahvma.org. Several of us on TCS have had cats with that symptom. We each saw different holistic vets (different states), and each of our kitties was diagnosed with, in Chinese Medicine, a Yin deficiency and a spleen Qi deficiency. The treatment is herbal (different things can be used) and effective. Basically, in Chinese Medicine terms, your kitty's energy is out of balance, and he's too "hot," (not as in a temperature), which is why he's licking all his fur off. Food alone will likely not resolve the problem, though the proteins you feed may make a difference.

Cooling (Yin) Foods

Meat and Dairy – duck, egg, rabbit, most shellfish, turkey, yogurt

Neutral Foods

Meat and Dairy – beef, bison, catfish, mackerel, milk, pork, salmon, sardines, tripe, trout, tuna
I'd focus on the cooling proteins until you can get to a vet that has training in Chinese Medicine.

hi

Just happened across this forum and saw your concern per food. I have been through alot with my cats. I finallyfound a holistic vet. I was lucky enough to find her online and have been with her for years.

Mario came to me. Within a few weeks he was sick. He was itching beyond belief. The vet put him on science diet for alleriges. It didnt work. I contacted the holistic vet....I refused to allow mario to be put on steroids. I had made an appt for a speicalist. So the holistic vet told me to go...Well, it was quite a surprise, the speicalist told me to do everything the holistic vet said to. He told me that modern med didnt really understand allergies etc.

I did everything the holistic vet had me do. She cured mario. It took about ten months. She put him on natures vareity after a number of other foods were tried. Mario eats raw rabbit.  He has beautiful fur now. Prior to all of this, his fur was falling out, and he had blood sores all over from scratching.

Mario had vaccinosis...I realized before he came to me, he had been given a rabies shot. that started it. I love the natures vareity products and it appears another shortage on the wet rabbit is happening again.

I have other cats and all of them have problems of some sort or another. It would be nice if they all ate the same foods, but they dont. what I have learned is this, dry food for a cat no matter how good is the very worst due to lack of moisture... Cats shouldnt eat grain either.

I moved and was very lucky to find a vet where I am now who works with the holistic vet and does do some holistic too. I also practice holistic with myself as much as I can too.

My cats dont go to the vet as much as before and seem to be much happier.

Alleriges are hard to deal with...Its a matter of finding something that doesnt set them off along with the right combnation of suppls. Mario can even eat chicken again. He loves eating and is a happy little guy. He isnt able to ever have another vaccine. I never let any of my cats outside.

good luck.

I also ended up switching my cat to first NV rabbit raw and then to a frankenprey diet. He's been itching less since on the frankenprey.. *crosses fingers*
