Hi, can anyone help.  I have a mother cat and 2 9 week old kittens that are continuing to nurse, abeit not much, but just really for comfort.  I desperately need to get her speyed but the vet says the milk has to have dried up before speying as if they spey and she still has milk it can cause mastitis and other problems.  As I am keeping the two kittens I don;t see how I can get them to stop nursing as I live in a small place and can't separate the kittens from the mother - any help? thanks

I've heard that you shouldn't spay the mother until after the kittens are weaned because it might cause the milk to dry up. Never heard that it causes mastitis or other similar problems. If your vet won't spay her, is there another vet in the area you could ask?

I had Goldy spayed when her kittens were about 11 weeks old. One of the kittens continued to nurse once or twice a day until she was 8 or 9 months old and it never caused any problems.

You could ask another vet, I retired one of my breeding girls recently she was full of milk and spayed with her 10 week old kittens, they all came home and went right back to nursing.

Otherwise you'll just have to wait until she weans them, if it's truly an urgen situation you'll just have to find a way to separate them but I wouldn't be doing that for a few more weeks, they are too young yet
