Our son called yesterday; he and the kids were on their own yesterday (DIL had to work), so they decided to come up for a bit of visit. It's a two-hour drive, but they were caught in a huge traffic jam due to a car accident, so it took them an extra hour. There was no way for him to turn off onto a different road and drive up through the "back" way, so he ended up in traffic. The kids were really good; they were so engrossed in a Veggie Tales DVDs that they were fine. (They watch no tv throughout the week, but are allowed to watch on weekends.)
Anyway, they got here and we played outside for quite a while. While we were playing football, my granddaughter decided that she wanted to play Store. So we took turns playing with buying things and using a credit card to pay for them....she has a card that she uses as a credit card. And believe me, she's only four, but that girl knows all about buying things on credit!
I was amazed at her. She knew all about swiping the card, signing her name, etc. She was so cute. (She wanted to buy a little necklace; when I told her the necklace cost $18, she put her hand over her mouth and said, "Oh, ma'am, I don't have that much money! Would you take $7 instead?" And, of course, I did. She bought that necklace 100 times yesterday, all for different prices, sometimes paying cash, sometimes using her credit card. Then she'd say "Thank you, ma'am!" and sashay away. That girl is hysterical.)
Came time for dinner and my grandkids (like all kids, I guess) are kind of picky eaters, although my Gdaughter isn't as pickly as my Gson (last year, my Gson went through a period where he wouldn't eat anything red.....I don't know why, but he wanted nothing red on his plate....he always wanted pizza, but no sauce. It was, shall we say......a bit challenging.). Sarah wouldn't eat meat, but she had sliced apples with peanut butter, some sliced baby carrots, fresh broccoli, a small ear of corn, applesauce and yogurt. Caleb had the same dinner, but he agreed to eat a bit of steak. Neither one will drink iced tea or soda; they actually prefer milk or just water. But when I came back into the house to work on dinner, Sarah came right with me as she wanted to help with dinner. So we pulled a chair up to the kitchen counter and I showed her how to wash the apples and broccoli (she is as messy of a cook as her grandmother!) and then I sliced everything with my knife as she watched. She set the table (and told Tabby to stay away from the kitchen table, much to Tabby's dismay!). She spooned the applesauce into small dishes....have I mentioned that Sarah is 4?
I felt terrible; as soon as the kids got here yesterday, they wanted cookies....when I know ahead of time they're coming, I always have cookies in the jar for them....that's what Grandmas do! And then they "steal" them when I'm not watching. We had a few store-bought home-made type cookies that Rick had gotten, so I quickly put them in the cookie jar and they were happy. Even though I was reminded that they really like cut-out cookies and these were not cut-outs. I told our son that he has to call me sooner so I can have fresh cookies on hand.....but I know that this was a spur of the moment kind of thing.
What a lovely day! We all had such a good time. Lots of hugs and kisses when they left. It was a perfect early Mothers Day gift.
