Okay, so when I started taking care of 7 4-week-old kittens, I didn't know the KMR would dry like cement. Now all the kittens have nasty hard bits on their chins and bits of their fur. I don't know how to clean it off without hurting them, especially the hardened goatees they're all sporting now. I've been wiping them now immediately so I don't add to the problem but what's already been done has been done and I want to get rid of the hard bits. How do I do it?

One way is to phone or mail the responsible representative or support (surely is on the box) and ask.

Im a little confused, I have never heard this a problem. Either people do solve it quite easily in some easy way, or you perhaps have some mix which makes it harden up.

Perhaps a little too dense?

Anyway, as they are now full 4 weeks, you can begin with a little additive kitten food. Royal canines baby food is good, or some good wet food.

Good luck!

Use a damp warm cloth, hold it on the hard stuff and see if it will soften.  And at 4 weeks they can be introduced to solid food - if they were with their mum they would probably start by walking through her food and cleaning it off themselves.

Can you hold a warm, moist washcloth to their chins for a few minutes? that should soften it, though I've not heard of this problem before either.

I know what you are talking about, when the KMR dries in their fur it is rock hard. I have had this issue before, and have it now with a very sick kitten who has a hard fur face from spitting out half of what I put in her mouth, or the plunger accidentally pushing to much out. But anyways I would just get a warm soapy washcloth and rub their little chins a bit with it each time you feed them, maybe before to loosen it and after to take care of whatever is there after they eat. I always just get the warm water to soften it and use my nails and work a bit out by scratching it while it is soft.

Thank you. I used a bit of Palmolive and warm water and softened it, then scratched it out with my nails and it finally came out. :D

I know exactly what you are talking about too. If I try to pick it off or use a flea comb, it seems to pull the whole hair follicle. I`ve had

some orphans that look pretty pathetic. I always wash their face and paws after with a damp paper towel but it never gets it all.

Def try to get them on some kibble. Royal Canin Baby Cat is perfect!!

I found this site by googling this exact issue. I have a litter of fosters who all have a hard crust of KMR on their chins and chests, even though they’re fluffing up otherwise quite nicely. I’ve tried using a wet washcloth, my fingernails, even a little water bath in a bowl, and it’s like impenetrable cement! So frustrating. If anyone has any other clues, please let me know.

How old are they? If old enough, they can be bathed so it softens and will come out.

If not, continue to soften it with a warm wet cloth. There is no other way.

I have a 2-3 week old kitten with KMR dried and crusted in its fur. I saturated an individual area with olive oil and massaged this in. I then put a generous amount of baby shampoo on the site and lathered with a little warm water. I washed this out very, very well with lots and lots of warm water. This removed most of it and what was left turned into gummy bits that I could easily work out of the fur with my fingernails without hurting the kitten. Note that I only SPOT CLEANED one area at a time so the kitten wouldn't get too cold or too stressed. I waited a few hours before doing another area.
