I'm worried about my Poppy.  In January he had an eye infection.  My vet gave me antibotic drops.  That didn't completely clear it up so she switched it to antibotic with steroid drops.  His eyes got better but there was still creamy discharge coming out of his eyes, then drying and I'd wipe it away...but the redness, squinting and scratching went away, until just a few weeks ago.

A few weeks ago, Poppy started obsessively scratching and licking at his neck and jaw areas.  His left eye was also watering and a little red.  I took him back to the vet, she said to give him more of the eye drops and it was allergies.

I don't think the eye drops are helping his scratching and licking.  His eyes look great though.

Also, he will not stop licking some of my rugs, some areas of my berber carpet and one of my chairs.  I covered up the chair, put away the rugs but cannot do anything about the carpet.  I don't know if the licking of the rugs, carpet and chair has anything to do with his "allergies".  Why is he licking the carpet?!?

He is an indoor cat but I have been opening the windows because it is nice outside and he sits in the open windows alot.

Does anyone have any advice, please?  Thanks

:wavey: Hi!

I haven't had a cat with allergies before, but I've had numerous problems with my feral Lucky's eyes. The antibiotic drops and a lubricant cleared up the problem both times for him. Did your vet stain the eye to see if it's been scratched? That could be the basis of the eye infection.

Other than that, it definitely sounds like allergies to me. Vibes for Poppy! :vibes:

Did the licking and scratching coincide with the eye infection or did it begin before or during the eye treatments?  Also, has anything changed in the house or maybe something been spilled on the chair and rug(s)?  I know it might sound weird but I spilled a chicken broth that I was carrying in a coffee mug to the grill outside.  Drops of the broth went everywhere and my cats were licking at those spots for weeks, even after a thorough cleaning.  But it does sound like it may be an allergy of some sort.  Maybe a vet visit is in order.

The licking and scratching was after I was done with the second round of eye treatment but his left eye started to get bad again, for the third time, plus the licking and scratching.

I've been trying to think if anything has changed.  I did get a new kitchen in October but I cleaned up really well and the rugs were put away and carpet and furniture covered.  I use to spray that Boundaries that is suppose to keep cats away from stuff.  I think he's licking where I had sprayed that about a month ago.  That's the only thing I can think of that was on the chair and carpet.  The one rug was brand new and he was licking it like crazy so I threw it out.

The vet did stain his eye and checked for scratches and there weren't any.

He's been to the vet 3 times now since January.  Just took him a couple weeks ago and they said it was allergies but I forgot to ask about the licking of the carpet and furniture.

I would like to know what is causing the allergies so I can stop it.

Thanks kittylover23 and NutroMike

I would call and give the name of the product you used to the vet, and see if that can be the cause of the allergies. It's better than all the stress of coming in for an examination, and best of all, a quick phone call is free. :D good luck! :vibes:
