Okay, we're not going to STOP feeding wet food but I have a question; Oliver has a water fountain by CatIt  and he loves it. Sometimes he drinks so much water off it that he gags and burps. I don't mind that but he isnt eating wet food as often as he used to. He used to get 25g of wet food in the morning and at evening. Now he's getting 50g at night and he's not even eating that so tonight I'm cutting him to 25g. Is his eating habits due to the water fountain? He prefers dry to wet when both are down too.

Are you sure it's not the other way around? Instead of eating less wet food because he's drinking more water, it's more likely that he's drinking more water because he's eating less wet food. Do you leave dry food out for him or does he just get it at meal times?

Well, water does have a tendency to fill them up and bloat their tummies, so it's quite possible he's not as hungry as usual. I would cut him down to 25g and see how that goes.

Good on you for feeding wet food!

Since wet food contains a good amount of water, he should be drinking less, not more--cat fountain or not. Have you had him to the vet recently to rule out an illness like CRF/CKD or other disease? The eating less food, but consuming much more water and a bit of indigestion makes me wonder about kidney disease (CRF/CKD).

How long has this been going on? How old is he?

Thanks for the replies guys :) He seen the vet in November when we got him and got a clean bill. He's healthy and all and very playful. I didn't even give him wet food last night, that's what I tried last time he did this (when we switched down to one wet meal) and he was fine. I only buy 3 flavours, sometimes 4 when they have it so I thought he might be just getting bored of it. We rotate the flavors though. Since we brought him home he was always fascinated with water (shower, sinks, watching the fish tanks get clean) so we got the fountain. He gets one serving of dry food a day but yes, it is left out. We don't top it up anymore whenever. So he is eating less per day but he does free feed. When he goes over he only eats a bit at a time. TOnight I'll give him 25g and see.

Hmmm... I agree that he should be drinking less water while on a wet diet.  My cats get about an 80/20 wet/dry diet.  I also have a fountain but they don't seem to drink an extraordinary amount of water.  Yes, I see them drink water but it is not an abnormal amount for a mixed diet and the litter box does not show abnormal urination.  Maybe he's just playing in the fountain and ingesting more water which of course would make him less hungry.  I have a sink/fountain etc. kitty as well.  She's always into some kind of water.

Well, we only got the fountain because my sister said they were awesome and Oliver was always playing in the bathtub, sinks etc watching water.
