I have a 6 month old rescue cat. Three weeks ago he began to lose motor control in his back legs. He is not in pain, jumps on and off the bed, plays, has normal bodily functions and a healthy appetite. He has feeling in his legs just has no control .

I have taken him to the vet and he was put on Clindamycin(antibiotic) for  1 week---no improvement. Now he is on Prednisone--still no improvement. I don't think the vet has any idea what is wrong. I was told the next option is an MRI at a cost of $1000.00.

I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and could suggest what to do next. I don't have an extra $1000.00 fo an MRI.

Thanks for any input.

I'm sorry that this is happening - 6 months is so young.

Have spinal xrays been done? Any consults by a cardiologist?

I would ask for another opinion. In my opinion, they are sometimes too quick to just throw an antibiotic or steroid a the problem, although if there is some kind of inflammation, the prednisone might have helped.

I think another vet, preferably a specialist, should have a look.

You really can't make a good decision for your little one without good information.

I've been told a few times that an MRI was the only way to know what is exactly wrong, but like you I have no way of coming up with such funds. It seems a huge leap from treating for infection and inflammation to an MRI. What about seeing a veterinary neurologist? I have a cat with a progressive neuromuscular disorder and there is no way of telling which without extensive tests, including an MRI.In his case, it won't matter what the actual diagnosis is, there is nothing we can do for him except give him the best quality life we can (he is on pred and it has helped a little). With your cat, being so young, I'm sure you want to push for some kind of diagnosis and help and wish you luck with this.

Thanks. Am seeing another vet this week. The other one didn't even do any bloodwork. As i said, he is happy and not in pain so I'll keep trying unless his condition worsens.

That's the whole issue, isn't it, quality of life. Zazesh now spends his entire time on my bed. I have to position him to eat from the plates and bowls that are on a chest that runs nearly the length of the bed. He loves being up there, using other cats as his pillow and leaning into me at night. He can't purr any more but he can still make muffins and that shows me he is happy. He eats well, shows an interest in what is going on, and isn't in any pain that I can discern. Apart from getting grumpy when he has his diaper changed, he's a contented cat.  I hope the new vet can give you more information and help for Zippy.
