I am feeding a colony of ferals and I have been now for a few months. since I started I have made tremendous progress and I can see evidence of that every day. They all eat within 10 feet, some closer some futrther away. One of the cats (my avatar) is the one of the kitties that eats close to me...however out of all the cats that eat that close she is the only one I have pet/touched with her permission. She has been eating next to me for about a month now and she is gettimg more and more used to me being around her. When I started she would flee at the sight of me form 30 feet away.

Heres what I've started to do to get her used to me

Oh and I know that the BIGGEST thing is Time

1) Sit next to her while she eats

2) Put my shirt down under her food bowl to get her used to my smell

3) Lay my hand down next to her food bowl to get her used to seeing my hand close to her

4) talk gently to her/other cats

5) she sees me pet/hold/scratch other cats near here which I think is a big reason why she has warmed up to me so fast

The reason why I am posting this thread is to see what I'm doing right
 and what I'm doing wrong.

If you guys could give me some advice to getting her more used to me and to let me pet her I would appreciate it!

It sounds like you are doing a great job! Is everyone spayed/neutered? That would be my first suggestion. Are you able to pet all of the cats?

I just finished up TNR with all the cats....had to abort 3 of them
Including her. I can't pet 5 out of the total 9 cats.

The sad thing is, some take longer, and some never come around to humans at all. I have found that the "sit still and let them come to you method works the best," if you're patient enough, especially if you are the "bringer of the food." You are providing them with something, so that's the only reason you are allowed near them to begin with, so you got that going on. Talking to them in soft low voices also projects good energy and they can feel all that, but some cats will never really trust a human, and you can't force them to no matter what you do.

We have a TNR program that works in our neighborhood. We have woods and tons of rodents. I am not sure where the colony is, but we've been taking care of the ferals that wander through for many years now. Some I've been able to establish trust enough to pet, though most it was a reluctant "yeah go ahead and pet me then give me my food" sort of deal. Some we've been able to help with parasite problems and injuries. One wanted to be with us, and after 5 years of developing trust and a good hearty bond, we eventually adopted him and brought him in last August (the one in my avatar.) Ferals behave completely different from house cats, sometimes it seems like they are a completely different species. Anyway, we have two right now that come fairly regularly, but it's still a no go trying to get near them even after 5 years of care.

The only thing you could do wrong is get frustrated, because they will sense that. Other than that, each is an individual and you have to let them be who they are, even it means keeping their distance. Maybe they will come around, maybe they won't. It's up to them, not you. Just keep up the good work.
