Help! I'd like to get one of these for my sister for her birthday.  I was in Target earlier comparing Kindle vs Nook when the sales guy suggested iPod Touch, which has both Amazon and B&N Apps.  And also is currently on sale.  Does anyone have any experiences, ideas, etc. to help me decide?  Also, are any of these capable of sending and receiving text messages?  Or are there other similar tables (around the same price range) that I should consider?

I just ordered a Kobo

http://www.kobobooks.com/touch

I ordered it from the Shopping Channel in Canada and it should arrive this week, so I can't give feedback.  But based on what I saw on the segment, it sounds great.  It has 17 different fonts, can store over 1000 books with the basic card, and had some other features that I found interesting.

The ipod Touch is too small to read on.

The Nook Touch and Kindle Touch are comparable, but a national review yesterday said the Nook was better.

You can get the Nook Color, which is essentially an Android tablet, for as little as $139 at any given time.  Check Best Buy.

The guy at Target said that the Nook Color was just for reading books and if you wanted something like an Android Tablet, that would be the Nook Tablet for $199.  I will research that more.

I am thinking you could probably read on the iPOD because it's about as big as my smart phone, but it wouldn't be ideal.  However, she already has a Nook Simple Touch (B&W reader) so this would be more for downloading apps and playing on.

IMHO an iPod is too small to read on.  My teens both have one and I have a hard time seeing stuff on it.  It's about the same size as my phone (an HTC).  I had a Kindle app on there, but I just couldn't read books on it.

For my birthday I bought me (with my birthday money) a Kindle.  I like the fonts on it.  I have a bunch of free books from Amazon on it.  I'm also able to take out books (3 at a time) from the  library via Overdrive.  Though both of those sites don't have new stuff on there.  So when I read The Big Cat Nap- I took that one out of the library, couldn't find it on Amazon for a price I was willing to pay, and I couldn't find it on Overdrive.

I have facebook on there.  Words with friends (so much easier to read the letters).  A couple of word games on there as well.

With the little bit of extra I just got from a temp job- I guess I could have splurged and gotten an iPad.  But I really didn't want one at the time- we've got 2 desktops and a laptop that work just fine.

I have the Nook Tablet and I just love that thing. I can read on it and use apps.....I'm an Angry Bird addict, but there are other games that I play, too. I'm really pleased with the fonts, the brightness (and that I can darken and lighten as I need to for day and night reading). Plus (and this was important to me), you can buy a 32 GB storage card for the Nook, meaning that the Nook will store up a total of 48 GB of space; the Kindle maxes out at 8 GB....there is no storage card for the Kindle....any Kindle. You can email with the Nook; I'm sure you can with the Kindle, too.

The cheaper Kindles have ads on them...I'm not sure how those ads work, but didn't want to be bothered with ads.

Overall, I'm a Tablet fan. The color is crisp and well, I just like the Nook more so than the Kindle.

(I should mention that I buy most of my apps at B & N. I have the free Angry Bird apps on my Droid and the ads can interfere with the game from time to time. Because I bought my apps for the Nook, there are no ads. I can't say whether the apps from Amazon are free, whether they have ads, etc. I don't know. But if part of the reason for the purchase is for apps and games, you don't want a lot of ads. JMHO.)

I have 'old school' Kindle though I have only had it for a year. I love it...it's all that I need. We have a PC and an iPad. I just wanted something to tote around with me and read a book. I have gotten so much enjoyment from it. Besides buying books from Amazon or borrowing, I get tons of free books from Amazon on Facebook. I have learned to ignore the three sites (that I have liked) that offer free books several times a day unless I am really needing a book. My only recomendation for an ereader would be that it is compatible to Amazon.

Thanks to all who responded.  My sister already has a nook simple touch reader for books, I was looking for something tablet-like but cheaper than an iPAD or similar.  It is sounding like Kindle would be the way to go for that, based on what I've heard and my research.

The Nook Tablet deserves your attention.  The Kindle Fire has consistently gotten bad reviews, and has virtually no internal storage.  Or, at least that's what the story was the last time I checked.  I actually had one pre-ordered and cancelled it when the reviews started coming out.

The Nook Color can be hacked to a full android tablet, but why bother?  Well, except to get the android market.

Thanks for your input.  The main reason I was thinking Kindle is that stuff seems to be cheaper on Amazon, plus the free lending library and movies you can get with Amazon Prime.   I still haven't decided and may not for a while. Her birthday isn't for several months - I was just thinking about getting it early so I could give it to her on my visit next month.
